Luton Town vs Middlesbrough

The English Football League has finally returned.

After two months away, fans up and down the country will tune in tonight to watch the Championship’s opening game between Luton Town vs Middlesbrough. It’s an intriguing matchup to say the least, and the Hatters will be eager to see their club back in the second division for the first time in 12 years.

Both sets of managers will be desperate to start the new campaign off with a win, despite their contrasting ambitions for the season ahead. It’s a niche scenario for both teams too, as either side will have a new face on the sideline this Friday evening. Not only are both new managers making their managerial debuts for their clubs, but in the game itself too.

Experienced coach Graeme Jones has been given the shot in the hot seat at Luton and he will be tasked with trying to keep them in the division come the end of 2020. The man on the opposing side on the touchline tonight will be Jonathan Woodgate, who was officially appointed by his former playing club back in June.

After narrowly missing out on the 18/19 play-offs, Boro will be hoping to go one better this campaign and secure a date at Wembley at the very least. Woodgate has already stated that he plans to play with an attacking mindset, after the side registered just 49 goals in the Championship last season.

Despite Middlesbrough’s more lofty ambitions, Luton are the slight favourites at 13/10 to win the game with Paddy Power. Their home form last season in League One was one of the best in the country, with the Hatters going unbeaten at Kenilworth Road throughout their entire league campaign. Heading into tonight’s fixture though, Boro will want to stamp down some early authority as the more experienced Championship side.  At 5/1 to win the game and both teams to score, Woodgate’s side hold some strong value to leave Luton with all three points.

In-front of a rocking home crowd though, Luton will be expected to create chances tonight. If any punters are looking for an anytime goalscorer, it is hard to overlook James Collins. The 28-year-old registered 25 league goals for Bedfordshire club last season and such responsibilities will be falling onto his shoulders again. At 7/4 to score at any point in the game tonight with Sky Bet, we expect collins to receive a popular backing from Championship bettors.
