Wigan Athletic vs Bristol City Betting Preview – 21/09/18

Wigan Athletic vs Bristol City

Wigan Athletic look to continue their unbeaten home record as they welcome Bristol City to the DW Stadium this Friday evening. The Latics currently sit 7th in the Championship after seven matches, just a point behind their opponents for this clash, so will be looking to leapfrog the Robins with a win here.

The hosts have won three and drawn one of their opening four home fixtures this term, with their latest victory coming in the form of a 2-1 win over Hull City on Tuesday evening. Two first half goals from Sam Morsy and Josh Windass ensured that Jarred Bowen’s effort for the Tigers just before the break acted as nothing more than a consolation come full-time.

Interestingly, only one of Wigan’s opening four home games have ended in an under 2.5 goals scoreline, which could suggest a high scoring affair in this one. Over 2.5 goals is priced at 4/5 with most bookmakers, however Betfair are offering it at a slightly higher price of 5/6.

If you fancy a both teams to score bet for this one, SkyBet and PaddyPower are both offering odds of 8/13, which is slightly higher than the 4/6 that Bet365, Ladbrokes and Coral have it at. The form book will have to be thrown out for this to happen however, as only one of the previous four fixtures between these two sides have ended with both teams scoring.

The last time these sides met, it was Bristol City who came away with a slender 1-0 win, so if you can see a repeat of that happening this Friday, you can get it best priced at odds of 10/1 with Bet365, higher than the 9/1 available with William Hill.

Bristol City suffered only their second defeat of the new Championship campaign on Tuesday night, as they were beaten by West Brom 4-2 away from home. Before that loss though, Lee Johnson’s side had won four games on the bounce against QPR, Swansea, Blackburn and Sheffield United, scoring 9 goals whilst conceding just once.

The Robins look a tough side to break down this term, they’ll be gunning for a play-off spot this season after narrowly missing out on one last season and currently occupy 5th position heading into this fixture. A win here for the Ashton Gate outfit would see them move into second place for at least a day, as the rest of the league don’t play until Saturday. A defeat however could see them drop out of the top six come the end of the weekend should results elsewhere work against them.

Away from home, Bristol City have looked fairly solid, losing just one game on the road so far. They can’t afford to dwell on Tuesday’s result if they’re to take anything from this match-up though, and should they regain the form they displayed prior to that game, then we would feel optimistic in an away win at the DW Stadium this Friday. The visitors are priced at odds of 23/10 to win with most bookies, however SkyBet are offering them at a slightly bigger 12/5.

This is a slight risk though; Wigan will carry some good momentum into this clash following their recent win over Hull, so if you would prefer to cover yourself by backing Bristol City double chance here, then Betway have them to either win or draw at 8/11, which is currently the best on the market.
