Chelsea vs Manchester City – FA Community Shield

Two teams that will be gunning for the Premier League title lock horns in the final of the Community Shield this Sunday. Last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City take on the victors of last seasons FA Cup, Chelsea looking to get their season off to a flier ahead of their domestic curtain-raiser next weekend.

Chelsea will travel to Wembley full of optimism after appointing former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach. The 59-year-old Italian replaces Antonio Conte in the Stamford Bridge dugout, hoping to revive the West London club following a disappointing 5th place finish last term. Sarri has brought with him 26-year-old central midfielder Jorginho from Napoli, so it’s going to be extremely interesting to see how the Italian international performs in the Premier League this season.

The Blue’s have endured a mixed pre-season this summer, winning two games against Australian outfit Perth Glory and Italian giants Inter Milan. However, in their latest ‘International Champions Cup’ clash on Wednesday evening they were defeated by Arsenal on penalties. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was denied from the spot in the shootout, allowing Gunners wide man Alex Iwobi the opportunity to clinch his side the win and progress through to Saturday’s final against Lazio. Chelsea won’t dwell on that result too much heading into this match though, and will feel confident in clinching their first piece of silverware on Sunday, having won the competition three times since the year 2000.

Manchester City head into this season as strong favourites to make it back-to-back title wins. The Citizens, who were so dominant last season have added former Leicester City playmaker Riyad Mahrez to their squad, making them an even stronger side this time out. Should players like Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling all demonstrate the same sort of form they did last term, it’s incredibly hard to see anything but another title win for the Sky Blues this coming season.

City will be looking to start their season off in the best possible manner by claiming their first piece of silverware this Sunday, but will certainly have one eye on their season opener against Arsenal next Saturday, perhaps resting a number of their key players ahead of that dual at the Emirates. Pep Guardiola will have hoped for some better preparation in the build-up to this Sunday’s tie at Wembley, with just one win in out of three games in pre-season (vs Bayern Munich last Sunday), they’ve lost to both Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund. These results don’t mean too much in the grand scheme of things as of course the squads used are experimental, however a strong performance is required here to ensure they get up an running correctly from the outset.
