Crewe vs Mansfield

League Two’s only midweek match was originally due to be played back at the start of September but postponed due to international call-ups.

Both sides are in mid-table and will see this game-in-hand fixture as an opportunity to make up ground on the top seven.

Crewe have been one of the most volatile, difficult to predict teams in the Football League this season and seem to swing wildly between excellent performances and dire runs of form. That they won their league opener 6-0 against Morecambe, only to lose five of their next eight league games (with just one win) sums them up. It was only two and a half weeks after their opening day in which they were on the other end of a 6-0 scoreline, being thrashed by Colchester United.

However, after their bad run of August and September, they have proved difficult to beat in recent weeks with just one defeat in their last six matches, climbing up the table with eight points gained from their last four. The main thing to consider about Crewe is their Jekyll & Hyde nature at home and away, with just one of their six league defeats coming at the Alexandra Stadium, with four wins and two draws.

Given it’s a difficult place to go and Crewe are in decent form, it’s worth considering backing them to win which can be backed at 12/5 with Betfair and the same price with William Hill and SkyBet. Crewe Alexandra also come out on top in the head-to-head record against Mansfield, winning five, drawing two and losing just one of eight meetings with the Stags.

Jordan Bowery has scored in two of Crewe’s last three games and can be backed at 2/1 to score anytime with SkyBet, the lowest odds for any goalscorer – that can be extended to 6/1 if you expect him to score first. Given that two of Crewe’s last four games have finished 1-1 and their opponents can be relied upon for score draws, a scorecast of Bowery to score first at 35/1 with Skybet is a good a punt as any if you’re aiming for a longshot.

Nobody in the league has lost fewer matches than Mansfield, with just one defeat, but they’re also draw specialists with nine of their fourteen matches so far tied, which is the joint most in the division alongside MK Dons and Forest Green, both of whom have played two more matches. The stags are actually two games behind all the sides above them and could go into the top seven if they won both games in hand to level with Tranmere and Forest Green.

However, that appears unlikely as David Flitcroft’s men have so often failed to get three points. Drawing so often, it’s a fair bet they’ll tie this one and you can get good odds of 5/2 at Bet365. You can boost that a little by adding Both Teams To Score to the bet with odds of 10/3, which is a fairly safe bet given that six of their nine draws have featured a goal at both ends. William Hill offer odds of 16/5 for the same bet. Be aware though, only two of Crewe’s last nine games have seen both teams scoring.

Looking at Manfield’s away form makes this look especially likely, given they have drawn all but one of their games on the road, although that was their most recent away match, at Mansfield last Tuesday.

In terms of goalscorers, Danny Rose could be worth backing at 7/4 with Bet365, given he’s Crewe’s top scorer this season with four goals, which is a little longer than the 13/8 offered by William Hill. Jacob Mellis scored against MK Dons at the weekend and has two goals in his last four games, and the midfielder can be backed at 4/1 with Bet365 to score anytime to continue his rich vein of goalscoring form with an anytime goal. Given Crewe’s recent fixtures have been low-scoring, a longshot of 12/1 with Bet365 for Mellis to be first on the scoresheet might be worth backing – neither side possesses a prolific striker who’s far more likely to break the deadlock.
