Croatia v England

It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for. A World Cup semi-final that somehow England are a part of, taking on Croatia to determine who takes on Didier Deschamps’ France in Sunday’s final. The nation are expectant, but know just how challenging their opponents for this match will be after enduring a promising tournament that has seen them beat the likes of Argentina, Denmark and most recently Russia to reach this stage. Croatia have some extremely talented players within their squad, with the likes of Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric pulling all the strings in the centre of the park, alongside Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic.

Juventus front man Mario Mandzukic is also a huge threat up front for England’s opponents; the domineering centre-forward always causes problems with his physical style of play so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs against England’s Harry Maguire, who is currently experiencing the form of his life and is one of the strongest defenders playing in Russia right now. It’s taken extra-time and penalties to decide Croatia’s fate in their previous two matches, with them needing spot-kicks to overcome both Denmark and Russia. This will undoubtedly work against them in this tie as they’ll be slightly more fatigued than the Three Lions, however it does show what a threat they are from 12 yards so England will be extremely keen to avoid this game going beyond 90 minutes.

After finishing as runners-up in Group G, England then overcame Colombia on penalties last Tuesday before dispatching Sweden 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Three Lions have been absolutely fantastic in Russia this time around, there’s no other way of putting it. You can argue that Gareth Southgate’s men have had an ‘easy’ route to the semi-final, however as the old saying goes ‘you can only beat what’s in front of you’ – and that’s exactly what they’ve done. England now head into this highly anticipated semi-final full of confidence, with an air of real optimism that they could reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1966.

Harry Kane is currently leading the race for the elusive Golden Boot, the Tottenham striker has 6 goals to his name and requires two more to equal the 8 goals Ronaldo netted back in 2002. He was selfless in England’s last game with Sweden, sacrificing his chances of scoring to drop deep and help the team, but against Croatia will certainly be looking to add to his impressive tally in Russia. Kane goes up against Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren here, the player who he completely humiliated in the Premier League last season when Spurs thrashed the Reds 4-1 back in October. Lovren had to be substituted within half an hour in that game – can Super ‘Arry recreate that beautiful moment once more in this encounter?
