Croatia vs England

England’s UEFA Nations League campaign continues with a repeat of the World Cup Semi Final when they face Croatia at the Stadion HNK Rijeka, in match that will played behind closed doors.  Both sides went beyond expectations in Russia and will be looking to get back to that form with both sides needing a win to put pressure on Spain at the top of their UEFA Nations League group.

Zlatko Dalic’s Croatia side come into this one off the back of a 6-0 drubbing by Spain in their opening nations League game in September and will want to bounce back with a win here. The hosts are favourites for the clash, best priced with Unibet at 9/5 and will want to repeat their semi final triumph here. This is the hosts first game back on home soil since achieving their best ever finish in a major tournament in Russia and despite their not being a crowd there to support them, they’ll be confident of a win after a run of 15 wins in their last 18 matches on home soil.

Much of Croatia’s squad has remained the same since the tournament in Russia. They have possibly the best midfield in international football to help them with Real Madrid pair Luka Modric and Matteo Kovacic as well as Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic so still have the quality to beat England once again. Ivan Perisic got the equaliser in that Semi Final in Russia and the Inter Milan Winger is best priced at 4/1 with Betfair and Paddypower to get on the scoresheet once again.

Both teams have scored in 6 of Croatia’s last 7 matches, including the Semi Final between these two sides so that could be a smart bet here. They’ve scored in all of their last 20 home games, a run stretching all the way back since 2013 so will be expected to score here. Both teams to score is available at 19/20 with Coral and Ladbrookes with a repeat of the 1-1 scoreline after 90 minutes in the Semi Final available at 5/1 with most major bookmakers.

Gareth Southgate’s chosen an England side packed full of young talent. Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount, James Maddison and Nathaniel Chalobah have all been brought into the senior squad for these two October internationals as Southgate continues to put his faith in youth in his England sides but will want to get back to the form they showed in Russia.

England put in two sub par performances in the September internationals. They were beaten 2-1 by Spain in their opening Nations League fixture at Wembley and then edged past Switzerland with a 1-0 win via a Marcus Rashford goal. These two fixtures against Croatia and Spain will give England more chance to test themselves against tough opposition in a competitive fixture in preparations for future tournaments.

England’s attacking options remain similar to the ones that were used at the World Cup with Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling all returning to the squad, with the addition of Sancho adding to Southgates options going forward. World Cup golden boot winner Harry Kane is a favourite to score in this one with the Spurs man available to score anytime at 2/1 with Unibet. Whilst Rashford, who scored in both of Septembers internationals against Spain and Switzerland, is available at 3/1 with a number of major bookmakers.

England have won their last 3 games away from home before heading to Russia and will be hoping to add to that here. Gareth Southgate’s side come into this one as the underdogs with odds as far back as 19/10 with Bet365, Unibet and Betway for a Three Lions win here.
