Carabao Cup Round-Up: 14/08/2018

With the first round of the Carabao Cup taking place on Tuesday night, we’ve picked six of the best fixtures complete with our recommended bet for each game.

Sheffield United vs Hull City

Sheffield United host Hull City in the EFL first-round curtain raiser in an all-Championship clash at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening. Both sides began their second-tier season in bad fashion, with both sides conceding three goals to slump to the bottom of the Championship table. However, in their recent games, United took all three points at home to QPR and City took a point away from home against United’s neighbours Sheffield Wednesday. Hull’s short trip back up the M18 could be a tough one against the in-form United, especially with two injuries to key players Ondrej Mazuch and midfielder James Weir and therefore we are backing the home side to advance into the second round of the competition.

Recommended Bet: Sheffield United to win at 4/5 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Middlesbrough vs Notts County

Championship table toppers Middlesbrough host League Two promotion competitors Notts County in an exciting game for the away side in the EFL Cup. Kevin Nolan’s side will be hoping to defy the odds against the former Premier League side, despite an unexpected poor start to life in the fourth tier of English football. County have just one point from their opening two fixtures and were beaten 3-2 by Cambridge United last Saturday, but Nolan will be keen to use the tie on Tuesday as a springboard to regain confidence. However, Tony Pulis’ side look in emphatic form so far this season after picking up seven points from their opening three games and we are backing the Teeside team to advance into the second round of the competition on Tuesday night.

Oldham Athletic vs Derby County

Oldham play at home to Championship promotion hopefuls Derby County in an interesting tie to start the EFL Cup first round. The home side have been unlucky to pick up just one point from the start of their league campaign, with a 2-1 defeat at home to MK Dons and a 1-1 draw away to Forest Green Rovers. However, Frankie Bunn’s side have one positive to take from their two opening fixtures of the season, with midfielder Dan Gardner having bagged two goals in as many games. County were battered 4-1 by Leeds United only last weekend and manager Frank Lampard will be keen to get back on track this week with a win against the League Two side. However, with County’s recent heavy loss, mixed in with their long list of injuries, we make home side Oldham our pick to win the game this week.

QPR vs Peterborough United

Arguably one of the most intriguing ties of the Tuesday evening EFL Cup games comes at Loftus Road stadium, when League One high flyers Peterborough United travel to London to play QPR. The away side have been in fine form so far this season, picking up back-to-back wins in the third tier. Their recent game away to Rochdale ended in a 4-1 smashing in favour of Steve Evans’ side, a week after a hard fought win at home to Bristol Rovers. However, QPR certainly haven’t enjoyed their start to life in the Championship, with back-to-back losses to Preston North End and then Sheffield United. The home side will be hopeful of turning their season around in the game on Tuesday night, but we are backing United to advance into the second round of the League Cup competition.

West Bromwich Albion vs Luton Town

In-form Championship side West Bromwich Albion host Luton Town in Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup tie, with both sides going into the game after picking up points at the weekend. Luton earned a well fought point at home to League One favourites Sunderland, whilst Albion won 4-3 away to Norwich City in a Championship classic. Both sides will be keen to build on their recent displays and will be reliant on two main men. Jay Rodriguez showed he is a level above the second-tier in the game at Carrow Road, whilst defender Matthew Pearson was key in Luton’s draw with Sunderland. However, we expect the home side to put on a display at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night, therefore we’re backing them to qualify for round two.

Yeovil Town vs Aston Villa

Yeovil Town host last season’s Championship play-off finalists in an exciting EFL Cup clash on Tuesday night. The hosts will be keen to build on their recent 2-2 draw with Mansfield when they return to Huish Park this week, with manager Darren Way looking to cause an upset against Steve Bruce’s Villa side. The Midlands based side travel south, looking to pick up a win against a team they’d expect to beat in order to progress and treat their fans to a cup run this season. Villa reached their last final of a domestic cup competition back in 2015 when they reached the FA Cup final against Arsenal. And despite losing 4-0 to the Gooners, Villa fans will be keen to see their side back at Wembley Stadium. Bruce’s squad depth will allow Villa to field a whole new side and therefore, we are backing the travelling team to get the win.
