EFL League One Play-Off Match Previews and Promotion Tips

The upcoming weekend is where four teams are given an opportunity to seal the third and final promotion spot to the Championship.

Jack Ross’ Sunderland, Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth, Grant McCann’s Doncaster Rovers and Lee Bowyer’s Charlton Athletic are the teams that were able to finish in the League One top 6 and, despite not reaching the more desirable automatic promotion places, one team will reign supreme to appear in the Championship next season.

In preparation for a hopefully lively set of fixtures to complete the League One season, we’ve looked at match predictions for each fixture, as well the current bookmaker odds over each team to be promoted, and our thoughts on the team who we think is the most capable.

Sunderland v Portsmouth Betting Preview

Starting off the League One play-offs on Saturday evening, Sunderland host Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats are hoping to prompt an immediate return back to the Championship after successive relegations from the Premier League down to League One. Pompey are in the opposite situation, hoping to push their way into the Championship after finding promotion from League Two last season.

Suffering a single defeat in their last sixteen at home, it’s asking a lot for Portsmouth to get much as the away side, even if they’ve gone unbeaten in their last five away games, winning four and drawing one. Kenny Jackett’s men are three points ahead of Sunderland, only falling short of a top two finish in the second half of the campaign, where it was only three points that saw both them and resurgent Charlton Athletic falling short.

Quality through the season has made it easier to envisage a place for Portsmouth in the League One play-off final, so backing them at EVENS to qualify makes the most sense. They’ll also be helped by the advantage of playing the second leg at home rather than the first, allowing an opportunity to capitalise after taking what we expect to be a tight draw in the first leg at the Stadium of Light.

Former Ipswich Town, Bournemouth and Bristol City attacker Brett Pitman has been key for Portsmouth this season, scoring eleven goals for the club.

Doncaster Rovers v Charlton Athletic Betting Preview

Concluding the first legs of the League One play-off semi-finals, Lee Bowyer’s impressive Charlton Athletic travel to Keepmoat Stadium, where they face a Doncaster Rovers side that many see as underdogs in this battle for promotion. Unlike the first fixture, this game possesses a team capable of winning both legs, which is backed up by statistics and current bookmaker odds.

While Doncaster Rovers effectively fell into the play-offs through teams below them falling at the final hurdle, Charlton Athletic fought to get to where they are, with The Addicks obvious favourites to defeat Donny after forming a third versus sixth meeting in the play-offs. With this in mind, Charlton are as short as 8/11 to defeat Doncaster in the away leg, proving to be the favoured team to qualify to the League One play-off final.

If it wasn’t already enough of a hint that Charlton Athletic will defeat Doncaster Rovers over two legs based on their pricing for the away tie, they hold an even stronger chance in the second leg based on Donny’s horrendous away form, winning just once in their last ten away from home. The second leg will take place on Friday, and considering that Charlton’s last home defeat came at the start of December, it’s an easy decision to get behind Charlton to qualify for the play-off final at 8/11.

Lyle Taylor’s twenty-one league goals for Charlton Athletic put him in contention for the League One Golden Boot, only beaten by Luton Town’s James Collins.

Which League One club seals promotion through the play-offs?

In perceiving Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth as being the two teams that we think will meet in the League One play-off final, it’s obvious that either of these teams will end up promoted to the Championship.

Choosing between the two sides is difficult as they’re both equally as capable if you judge your decision on their strongest periods of form in the season. Comparing the thirteen wins and six draws from Charlton Athletic’s last twenty-one games against the ten wins and nine draws from Portsmouth’s last twenty-three games, we see a stronger side from Lee Bowyer’s Addicks as opposed to Kenny Jackett’s Pompey dating back to each side’s last bout of successive defeats.

As Charlton possess a narrowly superior set of results, we would advise to back them to find promotion to the Championship after a decisive final meeting with Portsmouth. Both sides should give the other a worthy fight at Wembley, but Charlton are likely to hold their nerve more effectively over ninety minutes, securing their place in the second tier for next season.
