EFL League Two Play-Off Match Previews and Promotion Tips

The regular League Two season finally came to its conclusion last week, and the highly anticipated play-offs are now set to take centre stage.

Four clubs will be fighting it out for promotion from League Two into League One across a pair of two-legged semi-finals with the two winners then facing off in the final at Wembley. Mansfield Town, Forest Green Rovers, Newport County and Tranmere Rovers are the clubs in question and all of whom have a genuine shot of winning promotion to the third tier of English football.

We have taken a look at the two semi-finals set to take place, giving our predictions on which two clubs will come through the ties. We have also given our verdict on who we think will win the play-off campaign.

Newport County v Mansfield Town Betting Preview

The first semi-final sees two clubs coming into the play-offs under very different circumstances pitted against each other. Newport County produced a stunning run of form to propel themselves from mid-table in March to qualify, going unbeaten in 10 matches and winning six of those which ensured a seventh placed finish.

They will therefore be full of confidence heading into this campaign and will want to make the most of their home advantage in the first leg. The Exiles have been brilliant at Rodney Parade of late, beating both Lincoln City and Bury there so do not be surprised to see them take a first leg lead.

As for Mansfield, they must pick themselves up from the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season. The Stags faced an all or nothing match against MK Dons on Saturday but were beaten 1-0, meaning they finished in fourth place and must now try and get through the lottery of the play-offs.

It was a disappointing finish to the season for them, losing each of their last three matches and so they may not be as confident as their opponents heading into this tie. They have also been in awful form away from home, winning just one of their last nine on the road which they will need to sort out to avoid being out of contention after the first leg.

Mansfield are the favourites heading into this tie, but we think that the disappointment of missing out on the top three could hinder them. Newport by contrast are in great form and we fancy them to take a big enough lead in the first leg to see them into the final.

Tranmere Rovers v Forest Green Betting Preview

The other match sees two sides who have been sat in the play-offs for a while now face each other. Tranmere Rovers have enjoyed a fantastic first season back in the English Football League having won promotion from the National League last term, very much picking up where they left off to secure a sixth placed finish.

They were even in automatic promotion contention until the penultimate day of the season, but a poor run of recent form ultimately cost them. Indeed Micky Mellon’s men have managed to win just one of their last seven matches, form that they will need to improve if they are to win the play-offs. They will be looking to star man James Norwood to fire them to promotion, he is the leagues top goalscorer this season with 29 in total.

As for Forest Green, aside from the last couple of matches when their play-off place was already confirmed they have been in excellent form. They won five of their six matches prior to the last two and that included a 1-0 win at Tranmere’s Prenton Park in April.

Forest Green have done the double over Tranmere this season, and we fancy them to get the better of the Birkenhead side once again over the two legs. It will be a close tie, but Mark Cooper’s side have been far more consistent in the final month of the season and we fancy them to carry that momentum into the play-off campaign.

Recommended Bets: Forest Green to qualify at 10/11 with Sky Bet

Mark Cooper Forest Green

Mark Cooper will hope that his Forest Green side can go the distance.

Which League Two club seals promotion through the play-offs?

We therefore fancy a Newport County v Forest Green final at Wembley, which would be another tough game to call.

Both sides have decent form heading into the play-off, but having been a more consistent side throughout the course of the season, we’re backing Forest Green to come out on top and secure a first ever promotion to the third tier.

Cooper’s side are 11/4 to win the competition outright which makes them second or third favourites depending on which bookmaker you bet with. They have flown under the radar all season long, but write them off at your peril. They are a very good side who have a good balance, they are not reliant on one player and ultimately we think that they will hold their nerve and secure promotion.
