Eintracht Frankfurt vs Fortuna Dusseldorf

Eintracht Frankfurt and Fortuna Dusseldorf kick off the Bundesliga weekend when they meet at the Commerzbank Arena on Friday evening.

The two teams have only met twice before in the German top-flight back in 2012 and 2013 and its honours even so far with one win apiece. Eintracht Frankfurt were in good form going into the international break having won their last two league games, the second of which was an impressive 2-1 win away at Hoffenheim.

Croatian winger Ante Rebic went from hero to villain in that game after opening the scoring on 40 minutes he was sent-off with just over 25 minutes to go, which means he will miss Friday’s encounter. It’s a real Balkans connection that has helped the Eagles soar up the table.

Rebic has been joined by Serbian trio Filip Kostic, Mijat Gacinovic and Luca Jovic. The latter has two goals to his name this season and has been compared by many to Colombian ace Radamel Falcao. Betfair have him at 11/8 to be an anytime goalscorer on Friday.

Captain David Abraham is expected to return to the midfield having recovered from a groin strain. Paddy Power can only see one winner in this particular contest and they price the home side at 4/6 to continue their winning streak.

The hosts have scored 10 goals in their last three games in all competitions so it’s surprising that the Eagles have been strongly linked with a move for Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa, who is currently on-loan to Santos from Inter Milan. It’s in defence that Coach Adi Hutter needs reinforcements having seen his side ship 11 so far this term, one of the worst in the division.

Fortuna Dusseldorf have struggled so far this campaign having been promoted as Bundesliga 2 champions last term. Friedhelm Funkel’s side currently sit second bottom with only goal difference keeping them off the basement. Their only major success in the modern era was back to back German Cup triumphs in 1979 & 1980.

They lost their last three league games before the international break and have only scored one goal in their last four outings, and that came courtesy of striker Rouwen Hennings in a 2-1 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. Former Burnley forward Hennings can be backed at 16/5 with Coral.

It will come as no surprise that Funkel’s men are the joint lowest scorers in the top-flight with five and that they are yet to win away from home this season. To make matters worse, captain Oliver Fink is still sidelined with an Achilles injury and left-back Niko Gießelmann is also a big doubt for the game. The best that the Flingeraner can probably hope for is to escape with a point; Skybet offer 14/5 for them to achieve this.
