England

The ‘Three Lions’ World Cup campaign begins at the Volgograd Arena where they take on Tunisia in their opening game in group G. England enter the tournament with low expectations, just like they had in Brazil four years ago but the same result (a group stage exit) would be an embarrassment for Gareth Southgate’s side. Paired up with Tunisia, Panama and Belgium, should England not make it through to the last 16 it would be one of the upsets of the tournament.  A win in the opening fixture is a must for Southgate’s men to relieve the pressure off of another embarrassing exit.

Southgate has brought a breath of fresh air for England this time around however.  The players appear to be more relaxed and together as a group and seem to be enjoying their time with the squad and don’t look like they’re feeling the pressure as much as previous tournaments. England come into this on a great run of form as well. England are currently on a 10 game unbeaten run which included games against the two tournament favourites Brazil and Germany.

It’s reported that Southgate has selected Ashley Young, Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson over Danny Rose, Gary Cahill and Eric Dier respectively with Raheem Sterling set to partner Harry Kane upfront. Kane has recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of Englands final warmup friendly against Costa Rica last week and the Spurs forward will be looking to claim his first ever World Cup goal on Monday.

Tunisia

Tunisia come into this game against England on a good run of their own. The Eagles of Carthage were on an 8 match unbeaten run of their own before a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final warmup game.  The Tunisians know that they’re unlikely to qualify from Group G but will be hopeful that they can upset the odds against one of Belgium or England to get into the last 16.

Tunisia had a remarkable qualifying campaign, finishing top of their qualifying group and were unbeaten in their 6 group matches against Congo, Libya and Guinea.  They’ve impressed massively since then and held out until the 85th minutes against Spain so expect it to be tough for England to break them down on Monday.

Manager Nabil Maaloul is in his third stint as Tunisia manager and has a number of injury problems heading into the tournament. Their star man Youssef Msakni, who scored 3 goals in qualifying is absent from the tournament with injury and first team regulars Ali Maaloul, Mohammed Amine Ben Amor and Ghaylene Chaalali have all picked up injuries and will likely have limited play time here. Eyes will be on Wahbi Khazri for Tunisia on Monday.
