England vs Spain

England’s opening game in the UEFA Nations League is a tricky one, as they welcome Spain to Wembley in a match which should be packed full of quality. Gareth Southgate’s side captivated the nation this summer by reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, which has now seen a breath of fresh air injected into the international setup. There seems to be a huge feel-good factor in the Three Lions camp at the moment, which is sure to help carry them through to the 2020 European Championships.

The task they face here in the form of Spain will be a challenge however; although Luis Enrique’s men surprisingly failed to make an impact in Russia, bowing out of the World Cup to Russia on penalties at the round of 16 stage, they still possess some fantastic quality all over the pitch. England will have to sure up a defence that kept just one clean sheet at the World Cup. With the likes of Real Madrid duo Isco and Marcos Asensio expected to sandwich Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata in attack, the visitors will pose a huge threat in the final third.

For this new-look England side, who are now adjusting to life without both Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill following their decision to retire from the international fold, we expect to see some changes in this weekend’s clash. Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been called up to the squad for the first time since 2015 after impressing in United’s opening four fixtures; it’s looking likely he’ll start over Tottenham’s Danny Rose as Gareth Southgate looks to experiment with his squad. Elsewhere on the pitch, Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling has been forced to withdraw from the squad due to a back injury, which could see 20-year-0ld Marcus Rashford start alongside Harry Kane up front in the Three Lions favoured 5-3-2 formation.

For Spain, it’s a period of transition as new boss Luis Enrique takes charge for the first time. The former Barcelona boss has lost key players Gerard Pique, David Silva and Andreas Iniesta through retirement, with Atletico Madrid Diego Costa withdrawing front the squad due to personal reasons earlier this week. Barcelona’s Jordi Alba, who has been a mainstay in the Spain side for the previous four years has been overlooked by Enrique having made some negative comments about him when he left the Nou Camp last year. This has meant Chelsea’s Marco Alonso, who’s been in scintillating form for the Blues so far this term has been called up to make only his second senior cap.

Elsewhere in defence, Real Madrid duo Sergio Ramos and Nacho are likely to start, with Dani Carvajal guaranteed to line-up to complete an extremely resilient back-four. They’ll be out to prove a point in this encounter, having suffered much humiliation at the World Cup against sides like Morocco and Russia. Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets will anchor the midfield alongside either Thiago, Saul Niguez or Sergi Roberto, with Alvaro Morata almost certain to lead the line in the absence of Diego Costa. Celta Vigo front man Iago Aspas is likely to feature off the bench in the latter stages of the match.

With both sides possessing some strong attacking threat, we would suggest backing BTTS for this one. The last time these sides met it ended in a four goal thriller, with the points being shared come full-time. Harry Kane is the obvious threat for the hosts, he’s always such a danger and has an impeccable record for England at Wembley. With this considered, backing Harry Kane to score anytime and the match to end as a draw could be a decent bet – that’s priced at 13/2 with William Hill.
