England vs USA

Whatever your opinion on whether it’s right to give England’s leading all-time goalscorer Wayne Rooney an official send-off on Thursday evening against the USA at Wembley, Coach Gareth Southgate has more important matters on his mind as he looks ahead to Sunday’s final Nations League game against Croatia. England has won seven of their previous 10 against the USA and this is the first meeting between the two sides since June 2010, when they drew 1-1 in their opening group game in the South African World Cup.

Thursday night’s friendly has been named the “Wayne Rooney Foundation International,” with the player himself set to make a cameo appearance over 12 months since he retired from international football, to say a final farewell to the fans with all proceeds from the match going to the strikers charitable interests.

For other players, the match will be a chance to stake a claim in the squad as Southgate looks ahead to qualification for Euro 2020. Callum Wilson of Bournemouth is one of those players trying to catch the gaffer’s eye, having received his debut call-up for the match against the USA. Southgate has already hinted the 26-year-old striker will get game time on Thursday, his reward for some outstanding performances for The Cherries this season. Other players have not been so lucky with Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kieran Trippier having withdrawn from the squad after picking up a groin strain.

His club teammate Harry Kane will be looking to recapture the form that won him the Golden Boot in Russia last summer and Skybet offer odds of 9/4 for him to open the scoring at Wembley on Thursday. The 3-2 win in Seville against Spain last time out restored confidence to the Three Lions who had won just one of their previous four outings. Despite this likely to be an experimental starting XI for Southgate, the home side remain odds on to win the game with Paddy Power offering 1/5 for an England victory.

The USA head across the pond having won just one of their last six matches. Interim Coach Dave Sarachan, who is still uncertain about his own future, has four players in his squad, Cameron Carter-Vickers (Swansea City), Antonee Robinson (Wigan Athletic) DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle United) and Luca de la Torre (Fulham), who currently ply their trade in England.

The last time the USA recorded victory over the Three Lions, was back in 1993 and Skybet are confident there will not be a repeat of that upset on Thursday, by offering odds of 10/1 for an away win. Their last two visits to Wembley have ended in a 2-0 defeat and Coral are offering odds of 9/2 for the same scoreline on Thursday. Last time out, the USA drew 1-1 with Peru, that result followed a 4-2 reverse against Colombia.
