Germany vs Netherlands Betting Preview – 20/11/2018

Germany vs Netherlands

A point in Gelsenkirchen this evening will see the Netherlands qualify for the Nations League semi-finals in Portugal next summer. Their superb win in Rotterdam against France on Friday ensured that Ronald Koeman’s men have qualification in their own hands, as they face a Germany side that are already relegated from League A having picked up just one point from their opening three matches.

The Germans will be out for revenge after the Dutch inflicted a 3-0 defeat on them last month with latest reports suggesting Coach Joachim Low is already planning for European Championship qualification next year and looking set to try out a new-look side at the Veltins Arena this evening. Germany had a morale boosting 3-0 win over Russia last week after back to back defeats against Holland and France respectively, but Low is looking forward, rather than back as he attempts to bring some much needed confidence back to a side that has been faltering since their disastrous World Cup campaign in the summer.

Low is likely to keep faith with Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Kai Havertz who has deputised admirably for the injured Marco Reus with Jonas Hector coming in at left-back. Three of the side’s veteran players, Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller are likely to be in the starting XI with the latter ready to collect his 100th cap for his country. Betfair have odds of 9/5 for the Bayern Munich man to celebrate a century of appearances for his country, by getting on the scoresheet.

A defeat against France is the only blip on the Dutch record so far this season. Ronald Koeman has brought belief back to his country after their failure to reach Russia 2018. Friday’s impressive 2-0 win over the World Champions, fired a warning shot to the rest of Europe that Holland could be one of the dark horses at Euro 2020.

Former Manchester United playmaker Memphis Depay has had a new lease of life since joining Ligue 1 side Lyon  and the 24-year-old was outstanding in Rotterdam on Friday. Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon also impressed, allowing the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum (a goalscorer against France last time out) and Frenkie de Jong to play further up the field. Wijnaldum also scored against the Germans in the reverse fixture and the Liverpool star is 4/1 with Paddy Power to be on target this evening.

Despite their defeat the last time the two teams met, the Germans have the upper hand in recent times and were actually unbeaten against the Dutch in five prior to that 3-0 defeat in Amsterdam. Out of 41 matches in total, the home side has 15 wins to their visitors’ 11 with 15 draws. Betfair has the Germans as favourites to gain revenge on their old adversary offering 10/11 for a home win.
