Italy vs Portugal

“I want my Italy to win and to entertain,” were the words of Azzurri Coach Roberto Mancini in his latest press-conference ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash with Portugal on Saturday night. The San Siro is the setting for this latest showdown and the hosts’ 1-0 win in Poland last time out means they have avoided relegation from the top-flight of the competition next year and still have an outside chance of topping the section, but they must win at the weekend. Portugal ran out narrow winners in the reverse fixture however and Italy, who were poor in Lisbon, will be desperate to show they are on the right rebuilding path after their failure to reach last summer’s World Cup finals in Russia. Having won ten consecutive matches against Portugal prior to 2008, the Italians have been beaten in their last two internationals against the 2016 European Champions.

Mancini has been charged with getting Italy to Euro 2020 and the former Italian international has a good record in Milan, having won twice there playing for his country. In his latest squad there are three new call-ups, Sandro Tonali from Serie B side Brescia, Vincenzo Grifo from Hoffenheim and Stefano Sensi from Sassuolo, but Mancini has lost the services of Juventus playmaker Federico Bernardeschi, who has withdrawn on compassionate grounds.

In Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne, Mancini has one of Europe’s hottest marksman right now and Betfair are offering competitive odds of 16/5 on him being an anytime goalscorer on Saturday; not bad for a player who has scored seven in his last seven outings for the Partenopei. His former teammate Ciro Immobile is likely to partner him in attack, having reconciled his differences with Mancini, following a very public falling out prior to the recent win against Poland.

Cristiano Ronaldo has again been left out of Fernando Santos’ squad who will be looking to do the double over the Italians at San Siro on Saturday. Portugal have scored six in their last two games and last time out, a virtual reserve side eased past Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park. Santos’ side are priced at 5/2 on Bwin to run out winners on Saturday and if you’re looking for better value, for the visitors to do the double and for both teams to score, the same bookmaker will offer you 13/2. If you fancy going the other way, Coral are offering 4/1 for Italy to gain their revenge and for both sides to get on the scoresheet.

Portuguese striker Andre Silva has had a new lease of life since leaving Milan for Sevilla in the summer and he will be back on familiar territory and desperate to show the San Siro crowd what they failed to see during his time there with the Rossoneri. Midfielder Bernardo Silva also looks a different player at Manchester City this season and has the ability to turn any game. The 24-year-old will hope to get a starting berth at the weekend.
