Lazio vs Marseille Betting Preview – 08/11/2018

Lazio vs Marseille

Both of these teams would have been considered contenders for this season’s Europa League, but they’re experiencing different fortunes.

Lazio ran out 3-1 winners at the Stade Velodrome when the two sides met two weeks ago, and another win would eliminate Marseille and almost certainly book their place for the knockout round. That would be something of a shock given Marseille made it all the way to the final last season.

Lazio are yet to draw a game this season as their results fluctuate between impressive and disappointing. After just missing out on qualification for the Champions League due to a final day defeat to Inter, they’re experiencing a similar campaign yet again. Level on points with AC Milan in fourth place, they’ve generally beaten the teams they should be beating but come up short in the six-pointers against their competitors for the top four. Fierce city rivals Roma defeated them 3-1, and Inter outclassed them in a 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico ten days ago.

Given the circumstances of their final day defeat last season, there’s a sense that Simone Inzaghi has Lazio overachieving but ultimately choking in the games that really matter. Given a win would eliminate Marseille and almost guarantee them a place in the knockout rounds, this is a match that belongs in that category.

Lazio have won nine games this season, and lost five, all of which came against decent opposition: Serie A’s current top three, Juventus, Napoli and Inter, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt, who have a 100% record and top their Europa League group, and Roma. On a good day, Marseille belong in that classification of top-level opponents, but they didn’t show it at home at the Stade Velodrome two weeks ago and Lazio ran out deserved 3-1 winners. Betfair, Unibet and Betfred all offer odds of 8/11 that Lazio win once again.

The injured Lucas Leiva could be the only change from their starting eleven from two weeks ago, with danger man Ciro Immobile up front again. The Italian striker didn’t score then but grabbed two assists. The Italian striker is second in the Serie A top scorer charts with eight goals, and impressively ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s favourite to score in this match, with odds of 4/6  at Betfair and Paddy Power the best offered by anyone, a little longer than the 4/7 from Bet365.

There was a point earlier in the season in which Marseille looked to have taken advantage of Monaco’s severe drop in form to take their place in Ligue 1’s Champions League spots, but a poor run of form sees them struggling on two fronts.

With just three wins from their last ten games in all competitions, they’re six points off the Lille in third place, and facing an early elimination from the Europa League. Four poor defeats from seven away games this season doesn’t bode well for their trip to the Stadio Olimpico.

The good news for Rudi Garcia, who knows Lazio well from his time in charge of rivals Roma, is that he’s got an almost full-strength team to choose from. Central defender Rolando is the only absentee, with Kevin Strootman likely to form a double pivot at the base of midfield alongside Luis Gustavo.

Dimitri Payet, who scored against Lazio last time and has seven in total this season, will play in the number ten role. Him and Florian Thauvin, who also has seven goals, are key for Marseille, given the lack of a reliable centre-forward. Former Fulham flop Kostas Mitroglou has three league goals and is yet to get to get off the mark in the Europa League. 9/5 offered by Bet Stars are the best odds for Thauvin to score, while you can get odds of 11/4 with William Hill, BetVictor and Betfair for Payet to get on the scoresheet.
