League One Play-Off Betting Preview 10/05/18 – 13/05/18

Charlton Athletic v Shrewsbury Town

Charlton made it into the play-offs by the skin of their teeth this season after finishing just three points ahead of 7th place Plymouth and losing their last game 1-0 to Rochdale. The South London outfit have fluctuated between League One and the Championship for the past 10 years, so will be looking to get back into the second-tier and stay there this time around. The challenge they face in the form of Shrewsbury is an extremely tough one however. The Shropshire side topped the table for large parts of the season and were unlucky to miss out on a top two finish this term, so will be determined to win the play-offs to make up for their shortcomings in the latter stages of the campaign. Josh Magennis will be the key man for the hosts in this one; he’s scored 10 league goals this term and bagged last time these two sides met in the league last month so will take some good confidence into this tie.

3rd placed Shrewsbury were extremely unlucky to miss out on automatic promotion this season, they occupied the top two for large parts of the season but found themselves falling short in the final stages of the campaign due to the dominance of both Blackburn and Wigan. The Shrews head into the play-offs as the highest ranked side, but that means nothing in the lottery of this unforgiving competition. Paul Hursts’ men have been so impressive this season, they’ve got the second best defensive record in the whole division – conceding just 39 goals in 46 matches so will definitely prove to be a very tricky side to break down in this encounter. The visitors don’t take too much momentum into this game though, they had a disastrous end to their campaign, first losing the Checkatrade Trophy final to League Two Lincoln City at the start of August and then winning just one of their following six league games. They’ll have to push their poor end to the back of their mind in this match or risk missing out on their first ever opportunity to play Championship football.

Scunthorpe United v Rotherham United

Scunthorpe will probably deem their task the hardest of all the teams battling it out in the play-offs. They go up against favourites Rotherham this weekend in a match that promises to be packed full of action. The Iron have lost both of their league meetings against Rotherham this time out, conceding 4 goals in total to the Millers whilst replying with just 1. It’s going to be a massive challenge however this first leg tie will be their best opportunity to get a foothold in the fixture before the return leg next Wednesday. Scunthorpe have been solid at home towards the end of the season, losing just one of their last five matches at Glanford Park so will carry some good momentum into this crunch dual. Overall, the hosts ended their campaign on a high, going eight matches unbeaten to cement their position in the top six – will they continue with their good form here and grab the upper hand against their South Yorkshire counterparts?

Rotherham head into this game as favourites to win the play-offs this season and it’s easy to see why. Paul Warne’s men took 13 points from a potential 18 in their final six league games, with their last result on Saturday coming in the form of a 1-0 win over Blackpool on home soil. They were relegated from the Championship last term after an extremely poor season but will be looking to bounce straight back up to the second-tier this time around. One thing the Millers have struggled with recently has been their performances away from home. They’ve won just one of their last five games on the road so will probably set up fairly defensively here and focus on keeping a clean sheet, then attack Scunthorpe in the return fixture at the New York Stadium next Wednesday.
