League One Round-Up: 01/09/2018

Accrington Stanley vs Scunthorpe United

Accrington Stanley host Scunthorpe United at Crown Ground on Saturday afternoon, as two sides in contrasting form go to battle. The home side are unbeaten in their last four league games and have only failed to pick up points once, when John Coleman’s side were beaten 2-0 at home by Gillingham. Their recent tie saw Accrington draw 1-1 with Blackpool, four days after a magnificent 3-2 win away at Oxford United. Despite being one of the pre-season favourites for promotion to the Championship, Scunthorpe sit in 18th in the third tier, with just one win on the opening day against Coventry City. Their most embarrassing defeat of the season came only last weekend, when they were beaten 5-0 at home against Fleetwood Town. We are backing the in-form host side to do the business here.

Recommended Bet: Accrington Stanley to win at 13/10 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Barnsley vs Gillingham

Barnsley, one of the best sides of the early season so far take on a hit and miss Gillingham side who are looking to end their run of three games without a win when they travel to Oakwell on Saturday afternoon. The sides haven’t met since 2016, the last time Barnsley were in the third tier and on that occasions Gills ran out 2-1 winners. However, after the early season form of Daniel Stendel’s side in the league, which sees them sit in fifth, four points behind league leaders Peterborough United, Barnsley look like real contenders for promotion and we are backing the hosts to pick up maximum points in this one.

Recommended Bet: Barnsley to win at 4/9 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Burton Albion vs AFC Wimbledon

Last season’s Championship relegated side Burton Albion couldn’t have asked for a worse start and sit in the relegation zone of the third tier. Albion welcome a side also in dire form on Saturday, as they prepare to host Neal Ardley’s AFC Wimbledon, who only recently were involved in an exciting tie against Premier League side West Ham in the Carabao Cup. Both sides have lost their last two matches in the league and neither look like they have the fire power up front to score the goals required to mount any sort of challenge for promotion. Therefore, we are backing the game to be a draw here, with very few goals.

Recommended Bet: Match to be a draw at 21/10 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Coventry City vs Rochdale

The Ricoh Arena hosts a tie between Coventry City and Rochdale on Saturday afternoon, with two sides at the wrong end of the table looking to gain some traction in the third tier. The hosts are the more in-form side of the two, but only just after drawing 1-1 in their last outing against Gillingham. Rochdale were beaten in midweek by Middlesbrough by a 2-1 scoreline in the EFL Cup and were on the end of back-to-back defeats in League One to Barnsley and Walsall prior to that. Both sides have just one win this term and will be hopeful of making it two in Coventry this weekend. Rochdale won the most recent fixture between the pair back in 2017, with a 2-0 win. But the corresponding fixture back in 2016 saw the hosts edge it and we are backing Mark Robins’ side to emulate the 2-0 scoreline of last time with a similar win here.

Recommended Bet: Coventry to win at 11/8 with Betfair – BET HERE

Fleetwood Town vs Bradford City

Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town will be looking to follow up on their recent form as they welcome Bradford City to the Highbury Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Town have been in emphatic form since losing on the opening day to AFC Wimbledon and have remained unbeaten ever since. Fleetwood’s best result came away to pre-season promotion favourites Scunthorpe United, when they hammered the hosts 5-0 on their own patch. City have won two games from their five in August, but haven’t picked any points up elsewhere and look to have their hands full when they face off against a side seven places above them in sixth. Michael Collins’ side have one win on the road already this term, but we can’t see past an in-form Fleetwood side, who we think will make it five games undefeated with all three points on their home patch.

Recommended Bet: Fleetwood Town to win at 17/20 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Peterborough United vs Doncaster Rovers

High-flying Peterborough United look to make it six wins from six on Saturday after a remarkable start to the new season. Steve Evans’ side welcome one of the lowest scoring sides in the league, Doncaster Rovers, who have a desire to defend and the game could be an interesting one for the neutral. The hosts have scored 15 goals already this season and top the table having picked up maximum points. Jason Cummings has been nothing short of sensational since joining on loan from Nottingham Forest earlier this summer and Rovers will have their work cut out to achieve a third clean sheet in a row in the third tier. Doncaster have drew 0-0 in back-to-back games, but we are expecting the home side to win this game at a canter.

Recommended Bet: Peterborough United to win at 6/5 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Portsmouth vs Plymouth Argyle

Portsmouth remain one of five teams who are unbeaten in League One this campaign and sit just two places off the top of the league. Fans from Fratton Park will be hopeful that this year is the year their side return to the big time, but they first must overcome a Plymouth Argyle side who will be keen to find an upturn in form. The travelling side have failed to win any of their last seven matches, whilst the hosts are undefeated in their last six. The hosts will be the fresher of the two teams, with Portsmouth having had a week off since their draw with Doncaster and Plymouth having lost 3-2 in a Carabao Cup game on Wednesday evening. We make the home side our pick here, with Plymouth having struggled to show anything that suggests they could pick up points on the road this season.

Recommended Bet: Portsmouth to win at 4/5 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Shrewsbury Town vs Bristol Rovers

Shrewsbury Town return to Greenhous Meadow for the second time in four days when they welcome fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers. Both teams are already looking like early season candidates for relegation to the fourth tier. The away side have picked up one win this season, which was also on the road against Wycombe Wanderers. But after an impressive midweek victory over Manchester City Under-21’s in the Checkatrade trophy, Shrewsbury will be hopeful of picking up their first win of the season in the league. However, with both sides in extremely poor form and even showing displays which are uninspiring, we are backing a bore-draw in this tie.

Recommended Bet: The match to be a draw at 23/10 with Betfair – BET HERE

Southend United vs Charlton Athletic

One of the early season surprises has been the poor form shown by Lee Bowyer’s Charlton Athletic, who travel to Southend United on Saturday afternoon in a hope of finding their second win of the season. United sit three places above Athletic with seven points and could go as high as sixth with a win if other results go their way. Chris Powell’s side come into the game off the back of a win against Bristol Rovers away from home and a trip back to Roots Hall will be a welcome one for Southend after back-to-back trips on the road. Charlton travel to Southend on Sea with hopes of ending their poor form of three games without a win, but we are backing the in-form team in Southend to take maximum points against a disjointed Charlton side.

Recommended Bet: Southend United to win at 17/20 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Sunderland vs Oxford United

Former Premier League regulars Sunderland return home to the Stadium of Light to face Karl Robinson’s Oxford United. The Black Cats were expected to slowly bed into the new season after a summer rebuild, but after an unbeaten start in League One, Jack Ross’s side have gone into short favourites to take the title. Oxford were in awful form prior to recording back-to-back wins in the league and EFL Cup and travel to Sunderland in the hope of taking something back home for their loyal fans. The two sides have not met since the 1998/99 season and the hosts would love a similar result to that season, with the corresponding fixture ending in a 7-0 win for Sunderland in their second season at the Stadium of Light. Oxford will be traveling to the North-East with every hope of causing an upset, but we are backing the hosts to continue their unbeaten start with another win to make it four wins on the bounce in the third division, a league Sunderland haven’t played in for 30 years.

Recommended Bet: Sunderland to win at 1/2 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Walsall vs Blackpool

The Bescot Stadium plays host to an intriguing tie between Walsall and Blackpool, with the hosts having been involved in some of the best games of the season so far. Every game Dean Keates’ side have featured in this season have seen both teams score, as well as three or more goals in each of their last three matches. Blackpool have had an up and down campaign in their first five matches, with one win, three draws and a loss. However, they are unbeaten in three games and go into the game with every hope of securing three points that could fire them as high as the playoffs if results elsewhere go their way. However, despite three games unbeaten, we still make the side who sit in fourth our favourites to win here.

Recommended Bet: Walsall to win at 13/10 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Wycombe Wanderers vs Luton Town

Adams Park sees Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town facing off against one another after recent wins in the third tier. The home side have won their last two in all competitions, with a 2-1 win away to Bradford City and a recent win on penalties against Forest Green in midweek. Town have won their last two, which has fired them up to tenth in the league after an alarming start and Luton will be hopeful of picking up their third victory of the season when they travel to face a side flirting with the playoff places. Despite the home side having won their last two games, we are backing a Luton side who have been unlucky not to have won more games as of late when the pair clash on Saturday afternoon.

Recommended Bet: Luton Town to win at 13/10 with Sky Bet – BET HERE
