League One Round-Up: 11/08/2018

After an exciting start last weekend, League One enters matchday two of the new season this Saturday. Check out our round-up of this week’s fixtures below, complete with our recommended bet for all 12 games.

AFC Wimbledon vs Coventry City

AFC Wimbledon host Coventry City this weekend with both sides looking to win the game for different reasons. The home side are looking to make it two from two for the season, after beating Fleetwood Town 1-0 away from home last week. However, City will be looking to get their first points on the board, after being beaten at home by Scunthorpe United last week. The game at Kingsmeadow is the first the two sides have played in the league since the season before last, with the two sides sharing the spoils, drawing the game 1-1. Neal Ardley’s side are unbeaten in their last eight matches, whilst Mark Robins’ have gone four consecutive matches without a draw. The game looks a close contest but we are backing the home side to win the game.

Recommended bet: AFC Wimbledon to win at 6/5 with Sky Bet  – BET HERE

Blackpool vs Portsmouth

Blackpool play at home to Portsmouth in a game in which both sides will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run. Blackpool play at Bloomfield Road for the first time this season, whilst Portsmouth begin life on the road for the first time this season. Gary Bowyer’s Blackpool drew 0-0 away to the promoted Wycombe Wanderers last week, whilst Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth impressed against Luton, winning the game 1-0. Jamal Lowe was the only scorer in that game and is an obvious threat to the Blackpool back line ahead of this weekend. Blackpool have gone three matches without a win, whilst Portsmouth have gone five consecutive matches without a draw. The away side look the in-form side ahead of their game against former Premier League side, so we fancy Jackett’s men to win this game.

Recommended bet: Portsmouth to win at 7/5 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Bradford City vs Barnsley

Barnsley travel to Valley Parade on Saturday having not lost in their last ten matches, whilst home side Bradford City are undefeated in their last three. The away side currently sit at the top of the League One table after an emphatic 4-0 win against Oxford United, with Mamadou Thiam grabbing a brace. The Senegalese forward is an obvious threat to the Bantams’ back line, but Michael Collins’ side also have an attacking threat in Jack Payne, with the 23-year-old netting the winner last week against Shrewsbury Town. Barnsley’s emphatic result and performance last weekend makes us think the away side will make it two from two against City.

Recommended bet: Draw at 11/5 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Bristol Rovers vs Accrington Stanley

Accrington Stanley travel to the Memorial Stadium off the back of a 2-0 home loss to Gillingham Town, with John Coleman’s League Two winning side hoping to get back on track in the third tier. Bristol Rovers were narrowly beaten by Peterborough United last weekend, but Steve Evans’ team had positives to take, including a late goal from Tom Lockyer. However, despite a late rally in their League One opener, Rovers have failed to win any of their last eight matches and face a tough task against the 93-point fourth tier winners. Stanley’s two goal loss leaves them one place above the foot of the table, somewhere they will be hoping not to be come May. Rovers look a tidy outfit, despite a tough loss against Peterborough and therefore we are backing them to win their first home game of the season.

Recommended bet: Bristol Rovers to win at 10/11 with William Hill – BET HERE

Charlton Athletic vs Shrewsbury Town

Charlton Athletic play their first home game of the season after an impressive display last weekend league against favourites Sunderland. Lee Bowyer’s side were beaten 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, but took the lead early on through a Lyle Taylor penalty, a player who will be a real threat to the travelling Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon. Shrewsbury lost 1-0 to Bradford at home last weekend and face a tough task against one of last season’s top sides. However, despite the odds being stacked against them, John Askey’s side have won their last two against the home side, but we still think Charlton will run out victors on Saturday afternoon.

Recommended bet: Charlton Athletic to win at 21/20 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Doncaster Rovers vs Wycombe Wanderers

Doncaster Rovers host League Two promoted side Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday at the Keepmoat stadium. Wycombe travel to Doncaster having not won any of their previous nine matches, whilst Grant McCann’s side return home off the back of an emphatic 3-2 victory over Southend United last week. Doncaster’s young forward Mallik Wilks looks to be the player to watch in this fixture, having netted an impressive goal last week over the 90 minutes he featured. And we make the home side a good pick this weekend, especially with Wycombe’s new-look squad still requiring time to gel.

Recommended bet: Doncaster Rovers to win at 11/8 with William Hill – BET HERE

Gillingham vs Burton Albion

Gillingham host Burton Albion this weekend with the home side currently unbeaten in their previous three matches. Last season’s Championship relegation had the away side as one of the more favourable sides to be promoted to the Championship this campaign, but Nigel Clough’s side failed to pick up any points in their first game last week, losing 2-1 to Rochdale at home. Gillingham couldn’t have asked for a better start to life in the third tier after winning 2-0 away at Accrington Stanley. Youngster Brandon Hanlan opened his account for Gillingham last week and he looks like the player to watch this week also. And on current form we make Gillingham our team to back here.

Recommended bet: Gillingham to win at 19/10 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Luton Town vs Sunderland

Sunderland travel to Kenilworth Road to play Luton Town for the first time in 11 years, with the sides last meeting in 2007, with Town running out 3-0 winners in the League Cup. Jack Ross’ Sunderland look a solid outfit this season after an impressive transfer window and an opening day home win against Charlton last week. However, Luton will certainly be no pushovers, despite being edged out 1-0 away to Portsmouth last week. Key players to watch out for include Sunderland’s Chris Maguire, who won the man of the match award last week after an outstanding display and Luton’s James Collins who possesses an aerial threat that could trouble the Black Cats. However, despite Luton’s best efforts, we like Sunderland to win away from home here.

Recommended bet: Sunderland to win at 9/5 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Oxford United vs Fleetwood Town

Oxford United vs Fleetwood will clash at the Kassam Stadium this weekend in an important game for both teams after both sides were beaten last week. However, one side’s defeat was slightly more emphatic than the other, with Fleetwood being edged out 1-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon. Oxford were thrashed 4-0 by Barnsley, resulting in them propping up the League One table this week. But with Karl Robinson’s side returning to their home stadium this week, it could spark a resurgence. Fleetwood will be hopeful of picking up at least one point, which could result in a tight game. Therefore, with both sides keen on picking up their first points of the season, we expect a very nervy game with the result being a draw.

Recommended bet: Draw at 21/10 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Plymouth Argyle vs Southend United

Plymouth Argyle were an underdog for many this season, with many suggesting they may fly under the radar and make a late push for the playoffs. However, last week’s away defeat to Walsall brought them crashing back down to earth, making this game an all-important fixture for Derek Adams’ side. Southend United travel down the M3 also looking for their first points of the season, after a tough 3-2 defeat at home to Doncaster last week. 29-year-old Theo Robinson looks a player to watch for the Shrimpers this season, especially after his goal last week and we think he could be the vocal point in his side achieving their first win this week.

Recommended bet: Southend United to win at 6/4 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Rochdale vs Peterborough United

Rochdale host Peterborough in what is arguably the tie of the weekend, after both sides recorded a 2-1 win in the League One opener last weekend. Rochdale edged out Burton away from home, whilst Peterborough started their season off well with a win at home. Both sides haven’t drawn a game for several games, with Rochdale currently three games without a draw and the away side an astonishing eight games without a share of the spoils. However, after last week’s eye catching performance away from home, we fancy home side Rochdale to return the Spotland Stadium in fine form with a win.

Recommended bet: Rochdale to win at 11/10 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Scunthorpe United vs Walsall

One of last season’s most impressive side’s host Walsall this weekend, with Scunthorpe returning to Glanford Park after picking up three points against Coventry City last weekend. The side who finished fifth in the league last season will be hopeful of going one better this year to finish in the automatic promotion spots and a win against Dean Keates’ side could create the snowball effect United are after. However, Walsall will be looking to make it two in two after a win against Plymouth last week, with Luke Leahy one of their key players. However, with United returning to their home turf this week off the back of an impressive win, we make them our selection to win.

Recommended bet: Scunthorpe United to win at 17/10 with William Hill – BET HERE
