League Two Play-Off Betting Preview – 12/05/18

Lincoln City v Exeter City

It’s a battle of the City’s in the League Two play-offs this weekend as Lincoln host Exeter. The hosts are vying for back-to-back promotions after winning the National League last season, they’ve done remarkably well to make it into the elusive top 7 with a limited budget and would never have expected to be facing the possibility of promotion at this stage. Manager Danny Cowley has got the Imps playing some tremendous football this term; they’ve been exceptional at home, losing just three league games at Sincil Bank all season and last month won the Checkatrade Trophy after beating Shrewsbury 1-0 at Wembley. Lincoln will be underdogs for this match considering their opponents finished the season three places higher than them, however all of that goes out of the window in the lottery of the play-offs. Due to the hosts record at home this time out, we can see them taking the upper hand in this first leg clash, winning narrowly to nil.

Exeter were tipped by many to be promoted automatically this season but fell short of the top three after Wycombe’s back-to-back wins in the final two weeks of the campaign. Paul Tisdale’s men head into this match-up in fine form; they only lost one of their last seven games in League Two, with a 1-0 win over Colchester the most recent victory on the seasons final day last weekend. The last time these two sides met it ended in a 3-2 win for Lincoln, will they repeat this here? We can envisage another win for the home side in this first leg encounter, but whether they’ll have enough to make it past Exeter in the second leg remains to be seen…

Coventry v Notts County

Coventry play host to Kevin Nolan’s Notts County in this first leg League Two play off match at the Ricoh Arena. It’s extremely hard to predict who will come out on top in this encounter, just two points separated the these sides in the table when the season finished so it’ll be very interesting to see how this game pans out. Coventry are the lowest scoring team participating in the play-offs this term, while Notts County are the highest scoring side so they’re going to have to be on their game defensively to ensure they don’t concede on home soil in this cagey first leg tie. Interestingly though, Coventry have the best defensive record out of anyone in the play-offs, so although they rarely score more than two goals in a game, they do have the ability to keep out the opposition with their solid defensive capabilities. The last time these sides met at the Ricoh arena Coventry came out comfortable 3-0 winners thanks to a stunning hattrick from 20-year-old wide man Jodi Jones. We’d be very surprised to see a repeat of that scoreline here considering how tight play-off games usually are, however backing the hosts to get a foothold in this tie and win the first leg is favourably priced at odds of 11/10 with BetVictor.

Notts County spent much of the season in the top three and will feel disappointed in the fact they haven’t been promoted automatically. They now have a challenge on their hands to overcome a resilient Coventry side who have been very impressive at the back this term. The visitors inconsistency has cost them at times this season, especially since the turn of the year. Throughout 2018, the Magpies only managed back-to-back wins once, with victory’s almost always being followed with a draw or a defeat. Away from home they’ve been poor as well, winning just three of their eighteen matches on the road since the end of September. They lost 2-1 to strugglers Grimsby the weekend before last too, so don’t take too much confidence into this clash with the Sky Blues.
