League Two Play-Off Final Betting Preview: Coventry City v Exeter City

Coventry City v Exeter City – 28/05/18

We’re close to finding out who will be plying their trade in League One next season, with both Coventry and Exeter battling it out for that elusive spot in the country’s third tier.

Both sides won their respective play-off duals against Notts County and Lincoln in the second leg last week, with Coventry annihilating Kevin Nolan’s Magpies side 4-1, and Exeter brushing off the Imps 3-1 on home soil.

Coventry City

After tumbling out of League One for the first time in the clubs history at the end of last season, Coventry are now just one game away from returning to the third tier with a victory over Exeter at Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Sky Blues head into this crunch fixture as slight favourites: they’re a much bigger side than Exeter with more resources to hand, but will know that in the lottery of the play-offs that can all count for nothing.

Mark Robins’ side have been fairly inconsistent this term, on one hand they’ve gone through large periods of the season without losing (lost just one game in September, then went through March completely unbeaten). On the other hand, they’ve slipped up against some of the league’s weakest teams, defeated by the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Port Vale & Yeovil.

One thing that will massively increase Coventry’s chances of victory in this clash is the fact they have prolific goalscorer Mark McNulty to rely on up front. The 25-year-old striker was the league’s joint top goalscorer this season, netting 25 times, with his most recent finish coming against Notts County last week in the second leg of their play-off tie at Meadow Lane.

Coventry’s record against Exeter this time out sums up their inconsistency: they beat The Grecians 2-0 back in September when they welcomed them to the Ricoh Arena, but lost the reverse fixture 1-0 at the start of the year. It’s going to be very interesting to see how they fare in this one off game at Wembley, but with the momentum of beating Notts County in the manner in which they did last week, we can see them going the distance and bouncing straight back into League One come Monday evening.

Exeter City

Last years beaten finalists Exeter have surprised everyone by making it through this seasons play-off final for the second season in a row. The south west club are one of the smaller teams in League Two and have an incredibly limited budget so have done extremely well to get this far.

Paul Tisdale’s men will be looking to avenge last seasons heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Blackpool in the final this time around. They’ve performed solidly all season, often topping the division and finished the campaign just four points behind 3rd placed Wycombe, who were the final team to be promoted to League One automatically following a strong end to their season.

The Grecians finished their campaign in a very positive manner, losing just one of their last nine games so take some good momentum into this tie. They were held in the first leg of their play-off tie with Lincoln 10 days ago, but managed to overcome the Imps with relative ease last Thursday, beating Danny Cowley’s men 3-1 thanks to goals from Jayden Stockley, Hiram Boateng & Ryan Harley.

24-year-old Jayden Stockley has been the standout player for Exeter this term, with 23 goals to his name in all competitions, the former Aberdeen front man will be looking to be the hero in this clash on Monday. Stockley opened the scoring in Exeter’s second leg play-off win over Lincoln last week so will be brimming with confidence heading into this game: will he step up when it matters most and clinch his side promotion here though?
