League Two Round-Up: 25/08/2018

Newport County vs Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town will travel to the Rodney Parade to play Newport County this Saturday afternoon. Newport are currently sat in 8th place with seven points following their latest victory against Notts County, which ended 3-2 due to a 95th-minute winner through striker Jamille Matt, who snatched his first goal of the season. Newport got off to a poor start, losing their opening match against Mansfield 3-0 but since this defeat, they have looked a different team and manager Michael Flynn will want to extend this good run of form. Michael Jolly’s side have only won one of their opening four matches which came against opponents Macclesfield, since then they have struggled to hold their leads in their previous two games, both ending in draws after scoring first. Due to their recent run of good form and having their home fans behind them for this clash, we are siding with Newport County in this one.

Recommended Bet: Newport County to win at 23/20 SkyBet – BET HERE

Tranmere Rovers vs Port Vale

This League Two clash brings you two teams that are separated by just two places, as Tranmere Rovers host Port Vale at Prenton Park Saturday afternoon. Tranmere find themselves just one point behind Port Vale and a win could see them move up multiple places, which will top off a positive start to their first season back in League Two since 2014-15. Rovers come into this fixture following a 0-0 draw against Mansfield in a game where they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Neil Aspin will want a season filled with more success than the previous, last season Port Vale finished down in 20th just managing to stay clear of the relegation zone by one point. The Valiants’ last outing had them travel to Carlisle where they could not break their away hoodoo seeing them lose 2-1, Aspin’s side have not won an away game in the league since the middle of December. In this encounter, you have to back Tranmere to take the three points as they have looked dangerous this campaign and Port Vale’s away form has been a real issue.

Recommended Bet: Tranmere to win at 11/8 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Macclesfield Town vs Mansfield

Following their promotion into League Two as National League champions, Macclesfield are off to a poor start, failing to win any of their first four matches played so far. The Silkmen are currently in 20th, managing only to secure one point which came against Cheltenham on Tuesday, though Mark Yates’ side were unlucky not to leave with their first three points of the season with Emanuelson Duku scoring late in the game. Yates’ team proved to be very difficult to beat at home last season, seeing them go four months without a single loss at one point, however, they have already suffered a loss at home this season. That said, have plenty of time to make the Moss Rose a fortress like it once was. Mansfield arrives into this clash with the intentions of keeping their 100% unbeaten record intact, and with their opponents in poor form it looks very much achievable. Mansfield’s last game ended in a 0-0 draw against Tranmere Rovers in a game which they dominated in possession but failed to create any clear-cut chances. In this League Two clash, we see one clear winner in Mansfield as they look to extend their unbeaten start.

Cambridge United vs Cheltenham Town

Joe Dunn will not have been too impressed with his side’ss start to the 2018-19 season, after seeing them get thumped 3-0 in their opening match against Port Vale. However, he has a golden chance to turn around this poor start on Saturday when they face Cheltenham Town, who are yet to win a game. United suffered their second loss of the season last time out to a strong Exeter City side, with Cambridge’s slow start seeing them fall two behind within the first 15 minutes to set the tone for the rest of the match. Cheltenham find themselves down in 22nd after losing their first three consecutive games. Gary Johnson’s side have lacked quality in the final third, scoring just one goal to date which came in their last outing in League Two. It helped secure their first point of the season against Macclesfield. With both teams off to poor starts, they will be eager to win but with Cheltenham seriously struggling to find the back of the net so far this season, we feel Cambridge will snatch the win.

Recommended Bet: Cambridge to win to nil at 27/10 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Morecambe vs Oldham Athletic

Morecambe slipped free of the relegation zone last season on goal difference, narrowly edging out Barnet who dropped to the National League but it looks as if they will be scrapping it out in and around the bottom two once again. After losing their first three matches on the bounce, they gave their home fans something to cheer about when they got their first three points of the season in a 1-0 win over Northampton. Jim Bentley will want take his sides high spirits from midweek into their next game against Oldham in the hope of claiming their second win of the season. Oldham were relegated from League One last term and so far have experienced a mixed start to their League Two campaign. Frankie Bunn will see this next match as one that his side must win and anything less than three points will be disappointing for the club. Due to their poor start, we can’t see Morecambe leaving with any points from this match.

Recommended Bet: Oldham Athletic to win at 5/4 with BetVictor – BET HERE

Crawley Town vs Bury

This Saturday Bury will play Crawley Town at the Checkatrade.com Stadium. Both teams have had identical starts to their season seeing them win one, draw one and lose their remaining two games. Crawley’s last game pitched them up against Swindon in a fiery game that saw three players sent off, amd although Swindon lost two players Harry Kewell’s side couldn’t capitalize and had to settle for a draw which they secured in stoppage time through a penalty. Bury played Lincoln City in their last game where some late drama saw them lose their 1-0 lead and crash to a 2-1 defeat. Will Aimson received a second yellow card for a handball inside the box, giving the opponents a penalty which they scored, with the late goal and red card spurring them on score a second just seven minutes later. With both teams off to shaky starts, we can see this one panning out to be a draw.

Recommended Bet: Draw at 9/4 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Lincoln City vs Notts County

This Sky Bet League Two game brings you two sides at opposite ends of the table, with one side still searching for their first win and the other unbeaten. This Saturday Lincoln City will host Notts County in a game that looks very one-sided. Lincoln have had an almost perfect start, dropping just two points when they drew against Grimsby Town last week but apart from that result, Danny Cowley’s side have looked very strong. Striker John Akinde has been in superb form so far scoring four goals in four games for his side, and will look ahead to this next game as a good opportunity to add to his tally. Notts County ended last season in a respectable 5th place, however, they have not started this campaign in the same fashion. The Magpies have lost their last three consecutive matches, conceding a total of 10 goals in those defeats. Kevin Nolan has some serious work to do if he wants to see his side climb up from the bottom of the table. Lincoln come into this game as strong favourites and with their recent form and players filled with confidence, they should breeze past their opponents.

Recommended Bet: Lincoln HT/Lincoln FT at 2/1 with Bet365 – BET HERE

MK Dons vs Exeter City

MK Dons will take on Exeter City at Stadium MK in a game that is guaranteed to provide exciting football. MK Dons are in 5th place at the moment, just two points behind Exeter who are topping the table with 10 points, so a win for the home side would see them overtake their opponents and move up in the league. The Dons’ previous fixture saw them take on Grimsby Town which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Paul Tisdale’s side controlled the game from the kick-off but were unable to ultimately find the requisite cutting edge. This will be a poignant game for Tisdale, who faces Exeter for the first time since leaving in the summer. Exeter find themselves at the top of the table so far and manager Matt Taylor will be keen to keep his side there. The Grecians come into this match off the back of a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United and will want to make it back-to-back wins to see them stay at the top of the table. Taylor is not likely to make any changes to his side that faced Cambridge as they put in a strong performance and will rely on them too do the same on Saturday. This is a game you won’t want to miss with both teams in good form and looking to extend their unbeaten records.

Recommended Bet: Both teams to score at 4/5 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Colchester United vs Northampton Town

Northampton Town will travel to the Colchester Community Stadium to face Colchester United in search for their first win of the season. John McGreal’s side have started their season campaign strongly and currently sit in 3rd place after two wins and two draws from their first four outings. This next match is a great opportunity to secure another three points and they come into it with morale at a real high following their 6-0 thrashing of Crewe. Winger Ben Dickenson bagged himself a brace, getting his first goals of the season in doing so and also saw striker Luke Norris get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this term. He will hope to add to it against Northampton this weekend. Northampton were relegated from League One last season and already find themselves sitting just above the relegation zone. Dean Austin’s’ side are unfortunate not to have their first win of the season under their belts, as they have played some good football going forward but their defence have let them down towards the end of games on multiple occasions. We see this fixture going only one way and that’s with Colchester getting their third win of the season.

Recommended Bet: Colchester to win at 5/4 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Forest Green vs Swindon Town

Forest Green were lucky to avoid relegation last year after doing so by just one point, but it seems Mark Cooper’s prayers for a more prosperous season have come to fruition. On Saturday afternoon, Swindon town will head to the New Lawn Stadium to face Forest Green in the fifth match of the season. The hosts are unbeaten in the league so far, with the majority of their matches ending in draws. Last time out they played Stevenage which is ended in yet another draw, with neither team really threatening to score. Swindon finished last season in 9th place and will be keen to push for a promotion spot by the end of this year. The Robins were unlucky not to win their last match after conceding a stoppage-time penalty to level the score when they faced Crawley in midweek. Toumani Diagouraga and James Dunne were both sent off in their previous game and are suspended for the weekend, leaving manager Phil Brown with the unwanted headache of forced changes. The last two meetings between these teams saw Swindon take all six points on offer, beating Forest Green in both fixtures but expect a more competitive meeting this time around.

Recommended Bet: Both teams to score YES at 8/11 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Carlisle United vs Crewe Alexandra

Carlisle will want to continue their good run of form and make it three consecutive wins on Saturday when they face Crewe Alexandra. John Sheridan’s side has found some good form in their recent matches, seeing off opponents Cheltenham and Port Vale to see them move up to 6th in the table. Despite being thumped 5-1 by Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup, they did not dwell on the defeat and came out against Cheltenham with an added motivation. Crewe faced Colchester in their last match, where they were simply unable to compete and were walked all over them as the Essex side fired six goals past them. David Artell will not want his team to sit and reflect on the loss for too long and will urge them to focus on what lays ahead as there is still plenty of time to make amends. Crewe’s first game saw them put six past Morecambe with Alex Nicholls and James Jones both scoring braces and Artell will need the same clinical finishing his team showed in the opening game when they face Carlisle. With Cheltenham coming off a huge loss we feel that Carlisle will capitalise and see off their opponents.

Recommended Bet: Carlisle HT/Carlisle FT at 7/4 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Yeovil Town vs Stevenage

The final match in League Two to take place on Saturday will be between Yeovil Town and Stevenage, which will be played at Huish Park. Last season these two sides met twice with a total of eight goals being scored and if these past results are anything to go by then expect to see another goal-filled match. Darren Way’s side faced Oldham in their last league outing, where neither team could break the deadlock with it ending 0-0. Striker Alex Fisher has already claimed his first match ball of the year after scoring a hat-trick against Notts County in a 4-0 thrashing earlier in the campaign. Fisher was left out of the squad that faced Oldham but is likely to return to the first team to provide them with the goal threat they lacked last game. Stevenage come into this clash unbeaten and have surprised many with their successful start to the season after finishing down in 16th last term. Stevenage last game ended a 0-0 draw against Forest Green where they failed to create many attacking chances and they will need better performances from Alex Revell and Kurtis Guthrie if they stand a chance of beating Yeovil. Only three points separate these two sides and after their previous performances, we can see it ending in a draw.

Recommended Bet: To end a draw at 12/5 with Sky Bet – BET HERE
