Lille vs Strasbourg

French top-flight action returns this weekend as the impressive Lille look to make it their ninth home win in a row against a solid Strasbourg outfit in Ligue 1 on Friday night. The hosts have had an over-achieving season so far, but will be desperate to continue their good form against a side who are also looking good and sit just outside the top six. The sides have met once already this season in the domestic French Cup and it was Strasbourg who won the game 2-0 in the reverse fixture, whereas Lille beat their opponents 2-1 in the corresponding tie of last season back in January.

Under Christophe Galtier, Lille have been excellent this campaign, defying so many odds against some top sides – resulting in their current league position of third in their domestic campaign. Friday’s hosts have beaten some good teams, including a 3-0 victory over Marseille, a 3-2 victory away to Amiens and a 2-1 win away to Dijon late last month. A ninth win of the campaign here can be found at odds of 7/9 with William Hill and despite already having been beaten by this weekend’s opponents in the cup, Lille will be confident of grabbing all three points which could get them into the top two if rivals Montpellier were to drop points.

One notable point from Lille’s campaign thus far has been their ability to find the back of the net, even in defeats. Five of their eight wins this term have involved at least three goals for Galtier’s men and the hosts to bag three goals here is 3/1 with Sky Bet, whilst over 2.5 goals in the game is attractive odds of evens with Paddy Power. Lille talisman Nicolas Pepe will be the man vying for his eighth goal in his last nine Ligue 1 appearances and the Ivory Coast forward to score first here is 4/1 with Sky Bet. Also having threatened this year, French midfielder Jonathan Bamba has seven goals also and the youngster to score and Lille to win is odds of 2/1 – also with Sky Bet. The hosts also come into this fixture having the joint-best home defensive record in the division and a clean sheet for Lille could be a good bet here, which is odds of 5/4 with Bet365.

Strasbourg have had an up and down season under manager Thierry Laurey after 12 matches in the French top-flight, but Friday night’s travelling fans can hardly complain, with their beloved team currently sat seventh in the table and poised for a run at the top six if they were to beat Lille for the second time this season. A win for the organised travelling team is a huge 4/1 with Bet Victor, whilst the draw is 13/5 with Betway. Impressively, Strasbourg are now actually unbeaten in six competitive matches – a run which has included impressive 2-1 wins over Monaco and a 3-0 victory over Dijon in September. However, none of those victories have come away from home and their game at Stade Pierre-Mauroy will undoubtedly be a test.

The visitors have registered just one clean sheet in their last 16 Ligue 1 away matches and perhaps that is why Laurey’s side are long odds of 7/2 with Bet365 here. However, having already kept a clean sheet against their opponents in the cup, this might not be a bad bet. Strasbourg attacker Lebo Mothiba has bagged five goals in his last nine appearances and also got on the scoresheet in his sides last match and the 22-year-old South African to score his seventh of the campaign this weekend is odds of 9/4, whilst the striker to score first here is 13/2 – both of which are priced with Sky Bet.
