Manchester City vs Hoffenheim

Manchester City host Hoffenheim in Group F of the UEFA Champions League. City will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday night. It was their first league defeat of the season and meant they dropped down to second place in the Premier League table. Guardiola’s side are already through to the knockout stages and need just a point to guarantee first place. Hoffenheim can not reach the last-16 but need a win to finish ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk and secure third.

Guardiola’s men have scored 66 goals in 24 competitive matches making the free-flowing football enjoyable to watch for City fans and the neutrals. Their defeat on Saturday night came as a shock to many observers who saw City as an irresistible force who couldn’t be stopped. It is true that Chelsea scored with their first shot and City had dominated before the goal. However, they failed to take their chances and paid for it against a clinical and organised Chelsea side. The loss would have been a good wakeup call for the players who showed some complacency against Watford and have conceded in their last four games.

Man City have found it difficult at times in the Champions League, losing 2-1 against Lyon at home in an ugly display while Hoffenheim managed to take the lead against City after just one minute. They have conceded over a third of their goals this season in their 5 Champions League group stage games. Despite this, they lead the group by three points and Guardiola has the luxury of resting tired players in this dead rubber. City are priced up as heavy favourites to win this match at 2/9 but will be without Benjamin Mendy and Kevin De Bruyne, while Sergio Aguero and David Silva are unlikely to be fit. Riyad Mahrez has more assists (4) than any other player in the Champions League this season.

Hoffenheim are out of contention for qualification after collecting just three points from their five games. They are a double figures price to win at the Etihad, at 11/1. The issue for the German side has been staying solid at the back as they have no problem finding the net. The Bundesliga side have scored in a massive 20 of their 21 competitive matches this season, including in all five of their Champions League matches. They have scored 10 but have conceded 12 goals in total.

Hoffenheim are two points behind Shakhtar Donetsk and they will be hoping they can record a shock win to stay in European competition. Their chances of doing that are slim but they will fancy themselves to score, as they have done on a regular basis. Both Kerem Demirbay and Adam Szalai are suspended for the visitors, with Lukas Rupp, Havard Nordtveit, and Nadiem Amiri are all ruled out. There have already been 42 goals scored in this group so far; the most for any group in Champions League history is 51: Group F in 2016/17.
