Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Betting Preview

Marseille take on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final this Wednesday, looking to win the competition for the third time in 20 years. The Frenchmen head into this enticing fixture as underdogs to Diego Simeone’s Spanish powerhouses but as we’ve seen plenty of times before, the form book can count for nothing in the heat of an occasion as big as this one.

Rudi Garcia’s men do have the added advantage of the final being played in their motherland. Marseille have played at the Stade de Lyon plenty of times in the past when they’ve faced Lyon in Ligue 1, so should they lose this game it wouldn’t be down to playing on unfamiliar soil.

Since finishing as runners-up in their qualifying group, the Frenchmen have made it through to the final following impressive performances against the likes of Braga, Athletic Bilbao and RB Leipzig. Most recently, Marseille battled it out with Red Bull Salzburg in a thoroughly entertaining two-legged semi-final clash that was packed full of action. Despite losing 2-1 to Austrians in the second leg of that tie a fortnight ago, Marseille made it through by the skin of their teeth thanks to winning the first leg 2-0 at the end of April.

Les Olympiens don’t have the best record against Spanish sides in European competition however, they’ve only won just four of their 15 games against Spanish opposition in the Champions League & UEFA Cup/Europa League throughout their entire history. Two of those four wins came this season as well, against Athletic Bilbao in both legs of their last 16 clash back in March. Will they build on that here and make it five wins in 16, or slump to another defeat against an extremely resilient Madrid side gunning for glory?

Atletico Madrid will feel confident in their chances of winning the Europa League for the third time since 2010, but know just what a challenge lies ahead in the form of Marseille. Diego Simeone’s men have endured a fairly impressive season this time out, finishing second in La Liga ahead of Real Madrid, but need to win this match to ensure they have some silverware to show for their efforts this season.

After beginning the campaign in the Champions League, Atletico dropped into the second tier of European tournament football when they finished third in their CL qualifying group, behind both Chelsea & Roma. Since then however, they’ve made light work of beating the likes of Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow, Sporting Lisbon and most recently Arsenal in their journey to the final. Their semi-final clash with the Gunners won’t go down in the history books as a classic, but in true Atletico Madrid style they did what was required of them and grounded out a slender 1-0 win in the second leg to set up this bumper tie with Marseille.

With players like Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa and Kevin Gameiro all at their disposal for this game, Madrid take not only pure quality with them when they visit the Stade de Lyon, but also an abundance of European experience. Much of their squad know exactly what it takes to be successful on the elite stage, with many of the players who featured for them in the 2016 Champions League final still an integral part of their current squad.

Conceding goals is definitely not a weak point for Atletico, they’ve got one of the best defensive records in Europe so will prove to be a really difficult side to break down in this encounter. Diego Simeone’s side let in just 28 goals in all of their matches in La Liga, the Champions League & the Europa League this term, making them a force to be reckoned with heading into this highly anticipated final on Wednesday evening. Can they go the distance and lift the trophy for the third time in 8 years?
