Marseille vs Lazio Betting Preview – 25/10/2018

Marseille vs Lazio

On Thursday evening, Lazio travel to one of the great arenas of European football, the Stade Velodrome, to face Marseille.

Marseille are doing reasonably well in Ligue 1, fourth in the table with 19 points from ten games, but they have been poor in the Europa League and are yet to win. If they want to progress to the knockout rounds, this is a must-win, given Lazio are above them and Eintracht Frankfurt are top with six points and likely to continue their 100% record against the group’s whipping boys Apollon Limassol.

Marseille have had a patchy season in Ligue 1 so far, which will be disappointing given Monaco’s underachievement gives them a real opportunity to finish in the top three and get back into the Champions League. But in recent weeks they lost 4-2 to Lyon and 3-0 to Lille, both of whom are big rivals for the spots behind certain champions PSG. However, they recovered somewhat with back-to-back league wins either side of the international break – 2-0 against Caen and 1-0 against Nice on Sunday.

The return to clean sheets will delight manager Rudi Garcia after they looked shambolic against Lille and Lyon, and couldn’t see out leads in the Europa League. Luka Jovic scored a last-minute winner for Eintracht Frankfurt in the group stage opener at the Stade Velodrome, with they let a two-goal lead slip in Limassol, as Emilio Zelaya scored the equaliser in injury time. Bet365 offer mammoth odds of 28/1 for Marseille to lead at half-time but lose at full-time, which is a very good price considering they have set a precedent for it in recent weeks. It would be a brave bet but it has grounding behind it.

Florian Thauvin picked up an injury on international duty and sat out Marseille’s win at the weekend, but is expected to return here. He already has seven league goals and has four goals in his last five appearances for Marseille. SkyBet places him at 5/4 to score anytime, with Unibet a little longer at 16/11.

Luis Gustavo was suspended on the weekend so is likely to come back into the game here. Alongside Kevin Strootman, a coup of a signing from Roma, they should be able to shield the defence. Bet365 offer odds that of 11/4 that Marseille can win and keep a clean sheet, as they have done in their last two Ligue 1 outings – can they keep that run going?

Lazio started with a win against Apollon Limassol in their first Europa League outing at the Stadio Olimpico, which could turn out important given they were embarrassed in the following game, thrashed 4-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt. A win here would stand them in very good stead to qualify from this group, though.

Their form in Serie A has largely been good, with Simone Inzaghi having them overachieving once again. 18 points from 9 games is enough for them to sit in 4th place (where they finished last season). However, they’ve got a mixed away record and that could see them struggle at a stadium as intimidating and imposing as the Stade Velodrome. They have beaten Parma, Empoli and Udinese on the road this season, but lost to every quality side they’ve faced: Juventus, Eintracht and Roma (which nominally, at least, was an away game). Dusan Basta and Joaquin Correa are both suspended after being sent off in the last game, too.

There should be goals, whatever happens: there have been three or more goals in six of Lazio’s last seven games in the Europa league while their opponent’s last three games have also featured three or more. Skybet offers 4/6 for over 2.5 goals, which is the same as Bet365, Ladbrokes and William Hill. But if you want to go one further, you can get odds of 8/5 with Ladbrokes for over 3.5 goals.

Lazio have scored in every game apart from against Juventus so far this season, and will likely test Marseille’s defence more than Caen and Nice in recent weeks. Ciro Immobile has six goals in Serie A, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo, and six in his last seven games in all competitions. Skybet and Betway are offering the best odds for him to score anytime, at 13/8 and 8/5 respectively.
