Middlesbrough vs Burton Albion

We’ve reached the last eight of the Carabao Cup and one of the unexpected ties of the round sees Middlesbrough host Burton Albion at The Riverside Stadium. The home side go into the game off the back of a 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, their fourth game without a win in the league. Burton also head north off the back of a league defeat at Fleetwood and their recent record has seen them win just one of their last four league outings. The League Cup gives both sides the chance to put their poor recent performances behind them and Middlesbrough has already recorded a 1-0 victory over Nigel Clough’s men in the Football League Trophy this season whilst back in April, the two sides drew 1-1 at the Pirelli Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship with Burton being relegated at the end of the campaign.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis knows that he has to get the Teesside club into at least a play-off spot this season. Boro currently sit sixth in the Sky Bet Championship and although they are on their worst run of form so far this term, Paddy Power has them as 4/11 favourites to reach the last four of the Carabao Cup. Pulis’ team has needed penalties to dispose of both Notts County and Preston North End in previous rounds and Paddy Power offers odds of 7/2 for Tuesday night’s match to go end all-square after 90 minutes.

A 1-0 home win over Premier League side Crystal Palace in the last 16 is Boro’s only clean-sheet in the competition so far and with a busy Christmas schedule coming up, Pulis may opt to rest some of his key players. Top goalscorer in the league this season, Britt Assombalonga, has not been included in any of the Carabao Cup squads so far and its 23-year-old Ashley Fletcher whose goals have helped take Boro into the last eight; the young striker has got three in his four Carabao Cup outings and Ladbrokes price him at 8/5 to be an anytime goalscorer on Tuesday.

Saturdays defeat to Fleetwood has left Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion side in the bottom half of Sky Bet League One, but their memorable 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup has given the side belief they can reach the last four, despite odds of 7/1 from Ladbrokes for them to achieve this.

Having also beaten Aston Villa in round two and Burnley in round three of the competition, Clough’s side have certainly saved their best form for the League Cup in which the financial rewards for progressing are vital to a club of Burton’s stature. Club top goalscorer Liam Boyce has scored vital goals in the wins over Villa and Burnley and Ladbrokes make him 11/4 to hit the target once again at The Riverside despite the player coming off at half-time at the weekend with a thigh injury.

There’s more injury woe for Clough with both Scott Fraser (groin) and David Templeton (shoulder) doubtful for the trip to the North-East having picked up knocks in the defeat at Fleetwood.
