Netherlands v England – 2019 UEFA Nations League

England take on the Netherlands in UEFA Nations League semi-finals, with both sides desperate to try and win some silverware this summer.

The Three Lions have built excellently on their semi-final appearance in the FIFA World Cup last year, and finished top of a group containing Spain and Croatia to qualify for the last four. Gareth Southgate is doing an excellent job in charge of the 1966 world champions, developing a team full of young talent and allowing them to play a much better brand of football than they have played under previous managers.

As for the Netherlands, they have been rebuilding under Ronald Koeman following the disappointment of failing to qualify for both Euro 2016 and last year’s World Cup. But the former Everton manager is doing a fine job in restoring the Dutch to the world’s elite, and guided them past Germany and world champions France to book their place in the semi-finals.

It promises to be an exciting fixture between two extremely talented, young teams. We have looked at the odds ahead of the game and picked out some bets that could be worth looking at backing.

Ronald Koeman has done a brilliant job in revitalising the Dutch national team.

Betting Predictions for Netherlands v England

Harry Kane may be a doubt for England as he has been struggling with an ankle injury in the last few months of the season. He did start the recent Champions League final but did not look anywhere near his sharpest, and whilst the Three Lions skipper is undoubtedly their biggest goal threat, there are other players more than capable of filling in for the Tottenham Hotspur front man should Southgate choose to bench him.

Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford both proved influential in the group stage of this competition, bagging two goals apiece. But it is Manchester City forward Sterling who continued his excellent form into the Euro 2020 qualifiers, a hat-trick against the Czech Republic and another effort against Montenegro means that he has now scored six times in his last four England appearances. He could therefore be well worth a look at backing to score anytime, with odds of 11/5 available with Betfair.

In terms of the Dutch’s danger players, they have plenty but Memphis Depay is one who in particular will pose a real threat. The Lyon winger has been outstanding for the national team recently, scoring 11 times in his last 15 appearances for the Netherlands including two in the Nations League group stage. He is certainly worth a look at backing anytime, best priced at 23/10 with Paddy Power.

They will also have several of the young Ajax players who reached the Champions League semi-finals within their ranks. Donny van de Beek and Frenkie de Jong will be vying for a place in midfield, whilst Matthijs de Ligt will partner captain Virgil van Dijk at the heart of their defence.

Looking at the form book, England couldn’t go into the tournament in better nick having won each of their last five fixtures, the last of which was a 5-1 success in Montenegro. The Netherlands form is a little more hit and miss, they have won just two of their last five and were beaten 3-2 by a youthful German side last time out.

We fancy England to just edge this one and make it to the final. It will be close though and we fully expect both teams to score (4/5 with bet365), but we think that England’s more recent tournament football experience could well see them over the line.
