Newcastle United vs Manchester United

The pick of Wednesday night’s games in the Premier League sees in-form Manchester United travel to the north east to face Newcastle United. There has been a complete turnaround in mood at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though Newcastle are in real need of a positive result after struggling in recent weeks.

Newcastle have hit a real slump in the previous month or so, with the team winning just one of their last seven games in the Premier League. Their frustrations were further compounded last time out when they drew 1-1 to Watford away from home last time out, despite initially taking the lead through Salomon Rondon. They held on until 10 minutes from time, when midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled the Hornets back onto level terms to make it three games without a win for the Geordies. Newcastle are best-priced at 26/5 with Unibet in this contest, with most bookmakers fancying a Manchester United win.

Rafael Benitez will no doubt be desperate to invest in his squad in January, though whether or not he will be given the funds to do so remains an entirely different proposition at this point. Newcastle’s owner Mike Ashley is renowned for his reluctance to spend, but this is a team that is in real danger of becoming stale without added recruits. Benitez still has a large bulk of the squad that won promotion from the Championship two years ago and there’s only so long before the Spaniard eyes a move elsewhere. Currently three points clear of the relegation zone, a defeat in this one could see them drop into the bottom three.

Manchester United supporters will be feeling far more optimistic following their side’s form in recent weeks, with the team looking rejuvenated under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United have won each of their last three games in the Premier League, scoring 12 goals in the process and will be delighted with the way that their caretaker manager has loosened the shackles. Last time out they scored four goals against Bournemouth, as Paul Pogba netted a brace while forwards Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku also got on the scoresheet. In doing so, United are still averaging four goals a game under Solskjaer and are priced at 11/2 with Bet365 to score over 3.5 goals.

The days of Jose Mourinho’s style of play already feel like some time ago, with the team currently playing with greater confidence and exuberance. That said, people should not be getting too carried away with the way they have been playing, having only beat Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth – teams that all of the other top six sides have taken nine points from this season. United are still the favourites to win this one at 13/20 with BetVictor, as the team make to look it four wins from four under Solskjaer. That is despite the fact the team haven’t performed especially well away from home either, having won just two of their last seven away games in the Premier League.
