Newcastle vs Southampton Betting Preview – 20/04/2019

Newcastle vs Southampton

It’s 15th against 16th in Saturday’s late Premier League kick-off as Newcastle welcome Southampton to St. James Park. Both sides enjoyed impressive, important wins to more or less confirm Premier League survival last weekend, as Newcastle beat Leicester 1-0 and Southampton beat Wolves 3-1, but they’ll both be looking for at least one more win here after Cardiff won in midweek to close the gap to seven and five points respectively.

It was a typically organised displayed from Rafael Benitez’s Magpies last Friday night as they went to the King Power with a solid gameplan, shutting out Leicester’s many dangerous and creative players to hold them to very few chances, while generally enjoying control. It was a vital win, given they’d recorded just one victory from the previous five games and looked to be slipping into trouble once again.

Florian Lejeune and Sean Longstaff won’t be back until next season, but otherwise Benitez has a fully fit squad to choose from. Salomon Rondon has often done selfless work for Newcastle, playing well in front of the rest of his teammates and being tasked with holding the ball up, but on top of that he’s enjoying a respectable goalscoring season and could hit double figures for the first time in the Premier League. He’s priced at 2/1 with Bet365 to score anytime, while Newcastle – who have won five of the last six league games at St. James Park – are priced at 6/4 with Betfair to get the three points.

It was a familiar story for Wolves, who after getting such good results against the top six, suffered to another defeat against a side towards the bottom of the table as Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men came out deserved winners with a 3-1 victory at St. Mary’s. They’ve now won four of their last six games as they look a safe bet for survival, as only Liverpool and Manchester United have beaten them in recent weeks. The Austrian also has a strong squad to choose from, with only Michael Obafemi and Mario Lemina out, although Yan Valery is a double after coming off injured last time out.

In their last eight away games in all competitions, stretching back to before Christmas, Saints have only lost at Old Trafford and The Emirates. They’ve got the job done with necessary and vital wins at Huddersfield and Brighton, also beating Leicester 2-1 at the King Power and holding Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. Unibet offer odds of 9/4 that they have another impressive away win here. 11 of their last 14 games have finished with both teams on the scoresheet – Ladbrokes offers 1/1 odds of that happening once again here.
