Portugal v Netherlands – 2019 UEFA Nations League Final

Host nation Portugal take on the Netherlands in the first ever UEFA Nations League final on 9th June.

The Iberians will be hoping that they can win their second piece of silverware in three years, having already added the European Championship title to their cabinet back in 2016. Fernando Santos has done an excellent job with Portugal, and is beginning to put together a really good team with several good young players starting to breakthrough such as Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes.

As for the Netherlands, they will be looking for their first trophy since winning Euro ’88 but there is a feeling that something special is happening for them at the moment. Under the tutelage of Ronald Koeman they have been seriously improving and have gone from a team which failed to qualify for back-to-back major tournaments to one on the brink of silverware.

The final looks set up to be an intriguing match between two nations who are playing some good football at the moment. We have previewed the fixture and picked out two bets that we like the look of.

Ronald Koeman has turned the Dutch national team’s fortunes around since taking charge.

Betting Predictions for Portugal v Netherlands

In their semi-final against Switzerland, it would be fair to say that as a team Portugal didn’t perform at their best. Some of their big players struggled to perform at their such as Bernardo Silva and Ruben Neves and the Swiss squandered plenty of opportunities in that match. The difference in the end was the fact that they have one of the best two players in world football in Cristiano Ronaldo playing up front for them.

The 34-year-old is so often the man for a big occasion and he was again at the Estádio do Dragão, netting a superb hat-trick. Despite not being at his best, the Juventus forward still managed to grab the headlines and having being forced off through injury in the final of Euro 2016 he will be desperate to have a big impact upon the Nations League final. His record in finals is outstanding too, scoring 19 times in 27 so odds of 23/20 for him to score anytime with Sky Bet look very appealing.

The Netherlands came from 1-0 down to beat England 3-1 in extra-time, but again it was not the best performance ever by the Dutch. Whilst they retained possession nicely with some good passing, their forwards didn’t create that many clear cut chances and they benefitted from some sloppy mistakes from the Three Lions and John Stones in particular. Memphis Depay was particularly disappointing, and will need to improve in the final.

What the Dutch do have is a pair of extremely good centre-backs. Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in world football right now and once again produced a solid display against England, whilst his partner Matthijs de Ligt recovered from an early mistake to score the equaliser and go back to being solid defensively. They will both have to be at their absolute best in this one if they are to stop Ronaldo and give the Netherlands any chance of winning.

On paper this one looks a tight game, with very little separating the two sides. History is certainly on the side of Portugal though, who have won seven of the 13 matches these two have played against each other whilst the Netherlands have managed just two wins.

Both have some outstanding midfield players, the Netherlands almost certainly have a better backline but in Ronaldo Portugal have a match winner. That could prove to be the difference in a tight game, which may well go into extra-time. We fancy Portugal to get the job done and lift the trophy, which is best priced at 3/4 with Betfair.
