Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Betting Preview – 20/08/18

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

Two sides who both got their respective Premier League campaigns off to a flier last weekend lock horns in this week’s addition of Monday Night Football.

Crystal Palace welcome Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool hoping to make it two wins from two following an impressive 2-0 victory over Fulham last weekend. With just one win over Liverpool in their previous five Premier League encounters, The Eagles have don’t have the best of records against the Reds so will be looking to change that in this evening’s game at Selhurst Park.

One result that does stick in the memory however is the 3-3 draw between these two sides back in 2014, where Palace came from three goals down to salvage a point against Brendan Rodgers’ men. Goals from defender Damian Delaney and former striker Dwight Gayle (2) clinched the South London outfit a point on that fateful Monday evening four years ago, but will we see a repeat performance in this clash?

Although Palace endured a relatively quiet transfer window this year, their best bit of business was keeping hold of star forward Wilfried Zaha. The 25-year-old pace-merchant was linked with moves to both Tottenham and Everton this summer, however committed his future to the club last week by signing a new five year deal worth a reported £130,000 a week.

Zaha is Palace’s main asset and causes every team he goes up against major problems in that final third; he is the creative spark that will help Palace become a recognised top half team this season, so this improved deal with give them great confidence going into tonight’s match-up with the Reds. Having spent the majority of his career on the wing, Zaha is playing in a more central role up front this season and bagged Crystal Palace’s second goal against Fulham last Saturday, so will head into this fixture with plenty of momentum – can he continue his goalscoring form here against Liverpool?

Liverpool got their season off in the best possible way last weekend when they demolished West Ham 4-0 at Anfield. Last season’s standout performer and winner of the prestigious Golden Boot award – Mohamed Salah picked up where he left off by scoring the Reds’ opener, before Sadio Mane bagged himself a brace. Substitute Daniel Sturridge then made sure of the win with just two minutes left on the clock when he tapped in from close range, which sees Liverpool enter gameweek two brimming with confidence.

After wins for Tottenham, Manchester City & Chelsea this weekend, Liverpool desperately need a victory here to keep up with the rest of the league’s big hitters. Of course it’s still extremely early doors, however ensuring they avoid falling at the first hurdle, like United did this weekend by losing 3-2 to Brighton, is pivotal in their quest for the title this term.

Both of these sides are attack-minded, positive in possession and hugely exciting to watch, because of this, we’re anticipating an intense, open affair this evening. All six of Liverpool’s previous matches have ended in over 2.5 goals, with four of their last five league games against the Eagles ending with a win. We’re predicting Zaha to cause the visitors problems this evening, but feel as though Jurgen Klopp’s men will just edge it come full-time.
