QPR vs Aston Villa Betting Preview – 26/10/2018

QPR vs Aston Villa

QPR welcome Aston Villa to Loftus Road on Friday night as they look to complete their remarkable turnaround of late.

Steve McClaren’s men somehow find themselves above their opponents in the table and only four points off the playoffs, which would have been unthinkable when they lost 7-1 to West Brom and 3-0 to Bristol City back in August. Aston Villa under new boss Dean Smith will be looking to shoot up the table in a similar manner after suffering an early setback in midweek, losing 2-1 to Norwich.

QPR are a team of peaks and troughs this season – after their diabolical early form, they responded with taking ten points from four games, a run they followed up by losing back-to-back games against Norwich and Swansea while being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League One side Blackpool.

But they’re back on another good run and are currently one of the division’s form teams, taking ten points from four games again, with recent wins over Reading, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday while keeping Frank Lampard’s high-flying Derby to a 1-1 draw. The midweek 3-0 win over Sheffield United was the best result and performance yet, so it’s fair to say McClaren’s men are riding the crest of a wave.

That came crashing down before, and against Swansea (3-0), West Brom (7-1) and Norwich (0-1), QPR have come unstuck against sides that had ambitions of promotion but found themselves struggling. Should they keep performing, however, there are odds available of 17/10 at Bet365 for a QPR win, while you can boost the odds by betting on QPR to win and both teams not to score at 7/2, which could be worth a shot given that they have won and kept clean sheets in three of their last four games.

Given that they’re up against an opponent that so rarely keeps a clean sheet, it could also be worth backing a QPR goalscorer: Tomer Hemed has scored in each of his last three appearances for club and country. Paddy Power are offering odds of 21/10 for the Israeli forward to score anytime, while William Hill and Bet365 have him at 15/8.

Aston Villa might be unable to keep a clean sheet, with just two coming in fourteen league games so far, but they can always be backed to score, having done so in every Championship game up to now. 12 of their 14 games this season have seen both sides score, and you can get odds of 4/5 at Betfair, or 3/4 at Ladbrokes that it’s goals galore yet again for the Villans.

Given that goals tend to go in at both ends, it’s also a reasonable bet to expect 2.5 goals or more, which can be backed at 21/10 with William Hill, Betfair and BetVictor. That’s happened in eight of their fourteen games so far this season, which is actually less than you might think, but it’s down to four of their games finishing 1-1. On six occasions in total, their games have finished with a score draw – which can be backed at 16/5 with Betfair, or 10/3 with SkyBet and Bet365.

It’s difficult to assess Dean Smith’s impact at Villa given they’ve won and lost in his first week in charge. The clean sheet and the 1-0 win over Swansea last weekend suggested green shoots of recovery in terms of their defence, but a second-half double from Norwich’s Jordan Rhodes on Tuesday soon underlined the work that needs to be done. Nevertheless, they look less volatile and all over the place as they did in the final weeks of Steve Bruce’s reign, with the madness of their 3-3 against Preston unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.

Tammy Abraham has scored in three of his last four appearances for Villa and looks set to lead the line again, with Jack Grealish occupying a more advanced number 10 role under Dean Smith. The young Chelsea loanee would love to emulate the prolific season he enjoyed with Bristol City and there are indications he just might after a slow start. Bookmakers have him as the most likely player to score, with odds of 9/5 at Ladbrokes and BetVictor the best odds available.
