Rangers vs Hibernian

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers sit second in the Scottish Premiership, just a point behind Celtic, and have gone four unbeaten in the league, following Alfredo Morelos second half double to earn them three points at St Johnstone at the weekend. Hibernian are unbeaten in five themselves and that run includes a goalless draw, at Easter Road, in the reverse fixture a couple of weeks ago. That has left them in seventh place and with something here they could climb into the top six.

Rangers will be looking to keep the pressure on their Glasgow neighbours ahead of Saturday’s clash by seeing of Hibernian and the bookies expect that with the Gers priced up at 8/15 with Betfair. Gerrard’s side have been excellent at Ibrox and have only lost once in their last 12 home league games, and that defeat against Aberdeen is the only real blemish, with them having won ten and drawn the other. Six of those ten wins have come with those in Blue keeping a clean sheet and Rangers to win to nil can be backed at 13/8 with Sky Bet.

That was a winner in the Gers last home game when they defeated Hamilton 1-0 through a third-minute strike from Daniel Candeias and he is 10/1 with Unibet to repeat that act of scoring first. However, it is Morelos who tops the scoring charts in the Scottish top-flight with 11 goals and is 21/20 to find the net with Ladbrokes, with that not looking too bad considering he is odds-on with some firms. The Colombian was on the scoresheet when Rangers last beat Hibernian a little over 12-months ago. Eight of the last nine meetings between these two sides have resulted in both sides finding the net, so 5/6 on that outcome once again looks wise.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon will receive few Christmas cheers from the Rangers faithful when he takes his Hibernian side to Ibrox. They are quite a big 6/1, with Bet365, to return to Edinburgh with three points and they have won four of their last seven meetings against Rangers, although the last two matches have seen points shared, so the Draw at 31/10 with Bet Victor would be of interest, especially with Hibs having played out the most draws in the league. With Lennon’s side unbeaten in five (W2, D3), including a 2-0 win over Celtic and a goalless draw against today’s opposition then people may be interested in the Double Chance market that sees Hibernian or Draw at 13/8 with Bet365.

As it stands, Hibs are probably falling below their expected targets but do sit just a couple of points below city rivals Hearts, and of course, bragging rights will play a big part come May. They won their last away match against Hamilton and will be targeting consecutive wins on the road for the first time since September when they defeated Dundee 3-0 and St Mirren 1-0. Jamie MacLaren could return to the starting line-up after only featuring off the bench in Saturday’s draw against Livingston and the 25-year-old has bagged four goals in two Scottish Premiership matches against Rangers. The Australian is 7/2 to score with Betfair, while he can be backed at 12/1 to open the scoring on Boxing Day.
