Reading vs Derby County

The club season is finally back. England’s impressive World Cup is a distant memory, and what better way to kick the season off with football under the floodlights, with the spotlight firmly on a former Chelsea and England legend.

Newly appointed Derby boss, Frank Lampard, takes over a side with a huge amount of potential, and if his signings this summer are anything to go by, then the Rams are expected to be challenging for the top six again this year. Derby fans have even more reason to be optimistic this season after some impressive results during pre-season. Wins over Southampton, Coventry, Notts County and, most recently, a 2-1 win over Premier League newcomers Wolves. Goals from David Nugent and Chelsea loanee Mason Mount gave them a narrow win.

Last season the Rams finished in the final play-off place in 6th but were beaten by eventual winners, Fulham. Going into the game, there was not much expectation of a positive result for Derby and this was evident as Fulham turned over a one goal deficit at Craven Cottage to book their spot at Wembley. Since then, it has been a summer of change, with Frank Lampard taking his first steps into management. This high-profile appointment has seen a number of youngsters join the club, most notably Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Liverpool’s Harry Wilson who will be looking to flourish under Lampard’s guidance. New signing Jack Marriot will be pushing Cameron Jerome and David Nugent for the starting striking spot against Reading with Matej Vydra unlikely to feature after a move to Leeds fell through.

Cast your mind back two seasons ago to the Play-Off final and Reading were two spot kicks away from a place in the Premier League. It wasn’t meant to be as Huddersfield ran out winners and the Royals have struggled at the wrong end of the table ever since, with Jaap Stam leaving the club midway through last season. Paul Clement took over the reigns, only to see his side finish 20th and survive on the final day of the season thanks to results elsewhere. With the ongoing speculation linking Liam Moore away from the club to Brighton, the Royals player of the season handed a transfer request in so he is unlikely to feature in the season opener. Paul Clement has bolstered his striking options this season with the signings of Mark McNulty from Coventry and Sam Baldock from Brighton.

Reading’s pre-season has been a disappointing one with the Berkshire-based side not winning a single game over the summer. Draws against Turkish sides Besiktas and Rubin Kazan were positive results for Clement’s side which they will look to build on. However, the Royals were well beaten in their final friendly, as they were beaten 4-0 at home to Crystal Place where Wilfried Zaha ran riot at the Madejski stadium.

With the attacking options that Derby have in their ranks, alongside Reading’s lack of defensive options, it is sure to be a tough night for the home side at the Madejski Stadium. But the Royals front three are going to be key to any attacking threat with the pace of Modou Barrow and the trickery of Sone Aluko proving difficult to handle for any full back in the league. But with the likes of Mason Mount and Harry Wilson on the other side, Lampard will hope his team can make a positive start in this Championship opener and take – based on last season – what is an expected three points.
