Real Madrid vs Melilla

Real Madrid face Melilla in the second leg of their round of 32 Copa Del Rey tie. Madrid expectedly hammered the sixth division side 4-0 at the Estadio Alvarez Claro, meaning the tie is all but over and the hosts will be expected to rotate and use fringe players in the second leg. The first leg was Santiago Solari’s debut as Real Madrid manager.

Los Blancos have had a torrid season so far, sitting fifth and taken just 23 points from 14 games. They dispensed of manager Julian Lopetegui after a horrific start to the season but it has got better under new manager Santiago Solari, who has won six of his first seven matches, winning away at Roma and Celta Vigo. However, they were embarrassed by Eibar, losing 3-0. Madrid have won their last two games keeping back-to-back clean sheets and will be looking to keep the winning run going against Melilla. The match is of low importance but it will be an opportunity for Solari to experiment. Jesus Vallejo, Alvaro Odriozola, Nacho and Casemiro are all likely to be out, while Mariano, Vinicius Junior, Isco and Marco Asensio could all start

Solari’s side won 4-0 in the first leg with goals from Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Álvaro Odriozola and Cristo González. He named a strong XI with Sergio Ramos also featuring. It would be a surprise if big names played on Thursday with such a congested fixture list and the tie being dead and buried. The Madridistas beat Valencia 2-0 at the weekend with a bizarre own goal from Daniel Wass and a late second from Lucas Vazquez earning them the three points.  Real Madrid are expected to dominate possession and create lots of chances. Madrid had 21 shots, 14 of which were on target, in the first leg. They are at 1/14 to win but it is a surprise to see Real Madrid -3 handicap at 6/4. It landed in the last game and although Madrid are likely to make more changes, they should have the class to win easily. It is also unlikely that Melilla will create many chances and 4/6 for Madrid to win to nil represents some value.

Melilla are top of the league in the Segunda division IV. They are five points clear after 15 games with 11 wins, three draws and just one defeat. Luis Carrion’s men are on a great run, winning their last five league games since the 4-0 drubbing. It was the first time they had ever faced Real Madrid and it was expected that they would be overawed and outclassed. Playing at the Bernabeu will be fulfilling a dream for many of the Melilla players and it could be tough for them to remain focused. However, they will want to show their ability and make the game competitive. Melilla bear Atletico Sanluqueno 1-0 at the weekend, keeping their fourth clean sheets in their last five games. Melilla are at 22/1 which is enormous but understandably so as there is a large gulf of class between the two sides.
