Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds Betting Preview – 28/09/2018

Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds

Sheffield Wednesday take on Leeds United in a Yorkshire derby in the Championship on Friday night in a game which has plenty riding on it for both teams. There is plenty of history between these teams in recent years having been regulars in the second tier of English football, so expect an exciting, whole-hearted clash at Hillsborough.

Jos Luhukay’s Wednesday had a woeful start to the season, carrying through the form of the previous campaign in the early weeks. The Owls took just a point from their first three games in the Championship but have since recovered well, winning four of their next six and losing just once during that time. Such form has left them on the cusp of the playoffs, currently sat 10th in the table. Last time out, they defeated Aston Villa 2-1 away from home and will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in what will be a real test of their recent progression.

That is because Leeds still sit top of the Championship table, despite falling to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Birmingham last time out. Garry Monk enjoyed a happy return to Elland Road, much to the disappointment of the home crowd, who were hoping to see their team move three points clear of the chasing pack. It’s the first tough spell Marcelo Bielsa has faced as Leeds manager, with his team managing just one win in their last four games in all competitions. However, they remain unbeaten away from home this season with two wins and two draws and will be keen to extend that here.

Goals and Goalscorer Markets

Leeds have been free-scoring away from home so far this season, bagging themselves 10 goals in just four games on the road in the Championship. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have failed to keep a clean sheet at home so far in four attempts, making the chance of goals particularly likely in this one. SkyBet are currently offering 11/10 on Leeds to score 2+ goals, which on current form, looks a particularly good bet.

Sheffield Wednesday have also been scoring goals of late, scoring 2+ goals in three of their four games at Hillsborough. Those favouring the home team to cause Leeds problems can back them to score 2+ goals at 15/8 with SkyBet on Friday night.

Kemar Roofe is said to be closing in on a return to the first team and, if fit, will likely start in attack for Leeds on Friday night. Roofe is best priced to mark on his return at 17/10 with Betway, although if he is unable to feature then Tyler Roberts should get the nod. Roberts has two goals in three league games and is a healthy 13/5 to add to his tally with Unibet.

As for Wednesday, they have seen veteran forward Steven Fletcher find his shooting boots in recent games, with the former Scotland international scoring in each of his last two appearances. Fletcher looks set to lead the line on Friday evening and can be backed to score anytime at 3/1 with Unibet.

Outright Betting

As they are currently top of the table, Leeds are favoured to win this game with the majority of bookmakers. Unibet and Betfair currently have the away side at 6/5 to take home the three points, while SkyBet, Bet365 and William Hill are offering 23/20 for a Leeds win at Hillsborough. Those who fancy the hosts will be glad to see there is real value in a Sheffield Wednesday win. Ladbrokes and William Hill are both offering 9/4 on a home victory, but Bet365 are currently offering the biggest price at 12/5.
