Southampton vs Derby County

Southampton face Derby County for the second time this Wednesday attempting to do what they couldn’t when playing at Pride Park and book themselves a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Saints looked set to feature in the next round of the cup after they went 2-0 up inside 48 minutes, but a lapse in concentration saw them throw away their two-goal lead and draw 2-2. Saints had an impressive run in the FA Cup last year which saw them make it to the semi-finals where they drew Chelsea, who were a challenge too much and lost 2-0. Derby were eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round last year by Manchester United, but have a real chance of progressing with Southampton as their opponents this year.

Southampton have looked a much stronger side under the management of Ralph Hasenhüttl and their improved performances have seen them climb out of the relegation zone into 16th. Since Hasenhüttl was appointed, Saints have lost just two games out of eight and have seen off the likes of Arsenal and recently held Chelsea to a draw. With the home advantage, Saints arrive as strong favourites to secure the win inside 90 minutes and odds of 4/6 can be found with SkyBet. Derby holds a good record against Southampton but they have struggled in their most recent meetings and the last time they secured a win was back in 2007 which was seven meetings ago.

Although Southampton have improved their defence remains one of the weakest in the league with 39 goals conceded this season – only Fulham, Burnley and Bournemouth have conceded more. Nathan Redmond was Saints star player during their last meeting bagging a double against Derby and Bet365 are offering odds of 15/8 for him to score anytime on Wednesday. Danny Ings remains the clubs highest scoring player with eight goals, but due to injury will likely be replaced by Shane Long who bagged his first goal of the season on the weekend.

Derby County have the potential to cause Southampton serious problems on Wednesday if they turn up in some better form than we saw them in against Leeds United on the weekend. The Championship league leaders made light work of a slow and under-performing Derby side and eased to a 2-0 victory. The Rams travel to the South Coast as heavy underdogs to return as the victors, but if you fancy their chances then Bet365 are offering odds of 17/4.

Derby’s 2-0 loss to Leeds United on the weekend marked their third loss in five games and there eighth of the season, the most out of all the top six sides. The Rams only win, over the course of their last five fixtures, came against Norwich City who they impressively beat 4-3. Frank Lampard will look to both Jack Marriott and Harry Wilson to provide their goals on Wednesday with the pair scoring ten goals apiece this season. Marriott has odds of 5/2 with SkyBet to score anytime, while Harry Wilson has a price of 4/1.
