Southampton vs Manchester City

St. Mary’s is the venue as Pep Guardiola takes his out-of-sorts Manchester City side to Southampton on Sunday for a 2:15pm kick off. City will be looking to take back second position from Tottenham and make ground on league leaders Liverpool, while the Saints will be hoping to take advantage of their opponents’ poor form and provide the league with another shock win over the Blues.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl should be pleased with his team’s reaction since he arrived, as they have been performing much better and earning far more wins than earlier in the season. Before his arrival Southampton hadn’t won since the 1st of September away to Crystal Palace, and in his first home game in charge he took his side to victory over Unai Emery’s Arsenal in a game that finished 3-2. In their final game before Christmas Southampton beat Huddersfield away from home, again netting three times. In their most recent fixture versus West Ham they were beaten however there were still positives to take from that game, particularly in the first half. There is no doubting that Southampton have the quality of players required to stay in the Premier League and potentially fight for a top half finish but Hasenhuttl must find a way to ensure that they maintain their good performances and gather confidence with more good results. The home side are, expectedly, at 17/2 to beat Manchester City with SkyBet. Due to the visitors’ recent results though, three points could well be on the cards for the Saints.

Danny Ings has been involved in four goals in his past five games and is at 5/2 to score anytime with Bet365. The 26-year-old has put in some fine displays since his arrival from Liverpool and with more confidence being instilled into his team-mates as the points have begun to flow, he may receive better service in the games to come. Matt Targett’s crosses have been vicious at times, and the left-back has been impressive in the past few weeks. He will be aiming to improve on his tally of two assists so far in the fixtures ahead. Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand may return from injury in this one, with both missing in recent weeks.

Manchester City have endured a torrid week or so having lost both of their matches either side of Christmas against Crystal Palace and Leicester City. Guardiola’s men were previously unbeaten in the league until their visit to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the month and have looked unlike their usual selves ever since. The recent defeats have left them seven points from the top and they have been overtaken by Tottenham in second place who are one point ahead. City fans will be expecting a reaction to their poor Christmas form in this game and this reflects on BetVictor’s odds, who have the away side at 3/10 to beat Southampton this weekend. It has been the defence that has let them down recently, as they have conceded with the first shot against them in three of their last four league matches and PaddyPower have City to win and both teams to score at 8/5. They have now lost three times this season which is already more than they did in the entirety of last season which is what could end up being the statistic that costs them back-to-back titles.

Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have been City’s best players up to now with 28 goal involvements between each other. However, neither of the two has scored in their past three league games which is a reflection on the results of some of those matches. If there is to be a reaction from Pep’s side it will most likely be provided by one of these players and SkyBet have Sterling and Sane to have 1+ shots on target each at 11/10 for this reason. David Silva and Fernandinho have been crucial to their team’s midfield and this is clearly displayed by the fact that the Blues have struggled since Fernandinho’s injury which ruled him out of both of their defeats over the past week. Silva has netted five and assisted twice, with the midfielder tipped at 7/1 to score first by SkyBet. Fernandinho is unlikely to return for this match, while Gabriel Jesus and Vincent Kompany are doubts due to injury.
