Spain vs England

Spain host England in Seville on Monday night as the away side look to secure their first win in the UEFA Nations League. Gareth Southgate’s side were in action on Friday evening against Croatia away from home and despite a positive performance, the Three Lions lacked a clinical edge in front of goal, leading to a 0-0 draw.

Meanwhile, Spain prepared for the challenge of England with a trip to Cardiff to face Wales and enjoyed a fruitful evening, winning 4-1 at the Millenium Stadium. It was a strong showing from Luis Enrique’s team, who have now won each of their first three matches under his tutelage and as such, his side are favourites in this contest. A Spain win is best-priced at 4/6 with SkyBet, Coral and Bet365 in this contest.

Spain have looked confident in front of goal under Enrique, scoring 12 goals in his three games in charge so far, leading to all of their games having over 2.5 goals. A repeat of this and a Spain win and over 2.5 goals can be backed at 13/8 with Bet365. They are in another rebuilding stage after a third successive underwhelming major tournament, which saw them eliminated from the World Cup at the first knockout round by hosts Russia.

Since then, the likes of Gerard Pique, David Silva and Andres Iniesta have all retired, leaving others to play a bigger role in the team. However, one player who remains is Sergio Ramos, who is often just as great of a threat in the opposition box from set-pieces as he is an aid in keeping goals out of his own end. Given his aerial prowess and record of 94 professional goals for club and country, Ramos could be a good outside bet at 12/1 with William Hill to score first, particularly after netting against Wales last time out.

There is far less pressure on Spain coming into this fixture, as they currently sit top of the Nations League group after two rounds of games, having won two from two and are five points clear of both England and Croatia. The two sides were involved in a goalless draw on Friday night, despite Southgate’s men twice hitting the woodwork and having the greater chances on the evening.

World Cup Golden Boot winner Harry Kane was one of the players to be denied by the frame of the goal when he hit the frame of the goal and has now failed to score in each of his last six games for his country. That is the longest spell the England captain has gone without a goal since making his debut and those fancying him to end that drought can back Kane to score anytime at 11/4 with Unibet.

England haven’t been a free-scoring team in recent times, despite their success in getting to the World Cup semi-finals in the summer. The team has scored over 2.5 match goals just once in their last 19 internationals – that coming in the one-sided 6-0 thrashing of Panama at the World Cup. Bookmakers clearly don’t fancy England to change that anytime soon, with Bet365 having them priced as short as 1/33 to score under 2.5 goals here.

England’s previous trip to Spain ended in a 2-0 friendly defeat back in 2015, with goals from Santi Cazorla and Mario Gaspar getting on the scoresheet. Betfair and BetVictor both have  Spain to win 2-0 priced at 6/1 for this one.
