Spartak Moscow vs Rangers Betting Preview – 08/11/2018

Spartak Moscow vs Rangers

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers travel to the Russian capital to face Spartak Moscow. European fixtures have provided the highlights for the former Liverpool man in his short managerial career thus far, as his side blows hot and cold in domestic competition.

The two clubs played out a goalless draw at Ibrox a fortnight ago, and the shared points mean it’s still all to play for in the Europa League’s Group G: Rangers are top but level on points with Villarreal. Spartak are bottom but would level Rangers with five points with a win here.

Spartak Moscow have been struggling so far this season and unable to put together a consistent run of form. They’ve won just one of their last five games in all competitions, and face a battle to qualify for European competition again next year, down in 7th, a point off city rivals CSKA in fifth and a massive twelve off the league leaders Zenit St. Petersburg.

It could be said that the club are in disarray and this is a good time to play them, given the 2-1 defeat to FC Ural was their fourth consecutive loss in the league at home. Struggling to perform at home, the pressure from the home fans appears to be affecting performances, with the record in stark contrast to the run of five games unbeaten on the road.

If Spartak are to get a goal, the favourite to do so is the Brazilian former Shakhtar Donetsk forward Luiz Adriano. He finally scored his first league goal of the season after ten appearances on the weekend, in Spartak’s defeat to Ural. Unibet offers odds of 19/10, which is a lot longer than the 3/2 at Skybet, but should still be considered carefully given his lack of form.

Spartak have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight fixtures, one of which was the game at Ibrox. Riancho will be hoping that Salvatore Bocchetti performs as well at the back again – the experienced Italian was exceptional in the centre-half role against Rangers two weeks ago. Betfair are offering odds of 5/2 that Rangers win and inflict yet another home defeat on Spartak, which is longer than the going market rate, with most bookmakers offering odds of 12/5.

After a stuttering start to the season, Rangers are finally improving in the domestic game, picking up ten points from their last four matches in the Scottish Premier League, with a rare clean sheet against St. Mirren, a 2-0 win, the latest good result on Saturday. The concerning away form in particular, with just two wins from the first ten matches on the road with Gerrard in charge and a wait until October 21st for a first away win in the league, has improved of late. They have won back to back away games in the league, and recently came away from Villarreal with a valuable point from a 2-2 draw in their Europa League opener.

In fact, Rangers have been travelled away impressively in Europe under Gerrard, navigating four rounds of qualifiers unbeaten before the Group Stage proper. In team news, forwards Kyle Lafferty and Jamie Murphy both remain sidelined, but the manager can depend on Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos for goals, who has scored in eight of his last ten appearances, and another in the win at St. Mirren on the weekend. Again, Unibet offer the best odds, with 27/11 for the prolific striker to find the back of the net again, a lot longer than the 7/5 offered by PaddyPower and Betfair.
