Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal

Arsenal travel to the capital of Portugal on Thursday evening as they look to take their stunning winning run to eleven games in all competitions. Both sides have won both games so far, so it appears likely these meetings will decide who finishes top and second.

The Gunners were in action on Monday evening and were made to work hard for their three points against Leicester, but a Mesut Ozil masterclass in the second half inspired them to a deserved win. Their opponents in this Europa League fixture had a summer of turmoil but have rallied and are currently in fifth place in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

Sporting Lisbon might have imploded after last season when several players nearly declared their contracts void after the serious disputes with angry fans, emboldened by the vociferous criticism by their eccentric president Bruno De Carvalho.

Former Milan manager Siniša Mihajlović was appointed in the summer but lasted just nine days in the job, and first-team players such as William Carvalho, Rui Patricio and Cristiano Piccini left the club. While it’s not been a complete disaster so far, they’re already four points off the top and in fifth place, while it looks like a title challenge is unlikely.

They have won both matches in the Europa League so far however, but they were in a precarious position in the last match against Ukrainian side Vorskla and 1-0 down until a remarkable injury time in which they scored two goals through Fredy Montero and Jovane Cabral. Montero, the Colombian striker, has scored in each of his last three appearances and is priced at 11/4 to score anytime with Bet365, which is a good price considering Arsenal’s patchy defensive record and his likelihood to lead the line. William Hill have him at 21/10.

While Sporting have been indifferent on the road, they’ve got a very strong home record with a 100% record at the Estádio José Alvalade so far this season. Bet365 have them at 14/5 while William Hill have them at 5/2. It’s a generous price considering they’ve won every game so far, but it must be considered they’re yet to face a side as good as Arsenal.

Arsenal have looked better week-by-week under Unai Emery has gone on, winning ten straight games since their losses to Chelsea and Manchester City at the start of the season. The best yet was their scintillating second-half against Leicester on Monday night, though it should be considered that the quick turnaround between games, and Emery’s approach so far, suggests plenty of rotation, with Mesut Ozil unlikely to start and pull the strings again.

Rotation hasn’t stopped Arsenal winning in recent weeks however, and whoever plays seems to do the job. For example, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang only came on in the second half, and Aaron Ramsey was also a substitute, so both could feature here. The Gabonese striker is has scored three braces in his last five appearances, the last two from the bench. Bet365 give him odds of 11/2 to score two or more while William Hill give 13/2.

Another thing to consider is how Arsenal have turned it on in the second half lately: they were lacklustre against Leicester, Watford and Fulham in the first half, heading into the break drawing in each. But they were exceptional and blew each of them away in the second half, especially Fulham and Leicester. Their odds to be drawing at half-time and win at Fulham time is 4/1 with Bet365 and 19/5 at William Hill.
