Tranmere Rovers vs Macclesfield Town Betting Preview – 12/10/2018

Tranmere Rovers vs Macclesfield Town

Tranmere Rovers will be looking to bounce back from a heavy mid-week defeat when they face strugglers Macclesfield Town this weekend.

Micky Mellon’s men were hammered 6-0 by League One club Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy during the week. It’s a result few saw coming after a good run of form, but they now find themselves needing to bounce back. Having said that, the league is clearly the priority for Tranmere and they should be able to put the embarrassing result behind them ahead of this weekend. They are at a short 8/11 with most bookmakers to do that with a win this weekend.

The White Army have enjoyed a good first season back in the EFL so far, sitting just inside the League Two play-offs with 20 points from their first 12 games. Tranmere are only four points off the automatic promotion places, but the play-offs would represent a fine season indeed. Micky Mellon’s men hold a one-point gap over eighth place Colchester United and their main aim will be to consolidate their top seven spot across the course of the season.

That’s something they took a small step towards doing last time out in the league, courtesy of a dramatic 4-3 win over Morecambe. Harvey Gilmour scored the seventh goal of the afternoon, netting the all-important winner just one minute from time. That win made it two on the bounce, following a 1-0 victory over league leaders Lincoln City, and three without defeat, following a draw with MK Dons on the road.

Striker James Norwood has been key to Tranmere’s form thus far. The former Forest Green Rovers forward has netted eight goals in his first 11 games and he is currently the league’s leading scorer. Midfielder Johnny Smith has netted three himself, but there’s no doubt that Norwood offers the biggest threat having scored exactly half of his team’s league goals this season. Norwood is priced at a generous 7/2 to get the first goal with Bet365 this weekend. That’s one we like the look of.

Tranmere’s opponents this weekend, Macclesfield Town, are enjoying no such success in their first season since promotion. The two teams may have come up together, but Macclesfield have been a long way off the standard set by last season’s National League play-off winners.

The Silkmen sit bottom of League Two after 12 games, amassing just four points and they are still yet to manage a win. They are 9/2 to get their first win this weekend with Bet365.

All of Macclesfield’s points have come from draws and their most recent was against Newport County just over a week ago. The Silkmen lead by two goals at one point in that one, only to come away from Rodney parade with a 3-3 draw.

Since then, the Cheshire club have lost 1-0 to Notts County in the league before losing 4-1 to Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup. Though, between those games, with Macclesfield still winless in the league, the board at Moss Rose decided to sack manager Mark Yates and they are yet to find a new boss. Former Maidstone United boss Jay Saunders is favourite to take over at 2/1 with Bet Victor.

Macclesfield’s lack of goals has been at the heart of their struggles this season, and that’s proven by the club’s top scorer being defender David Fitzpatrick with just three goals. The Silkmen have just 11 goals so far this season, conceding 23. That’s why Tranmere to win to nil with SkyBet is a good option at 7/4.

Tranmere Rovers are clear favourites here, especially being at home and against a team without a manager. Macclesfield may get the ‘new manager bounce’ they desire, but until they get a new man in. Until then, expect their struggles continue and especially against a promising Tranmere side.
