Valencia vs Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United travel to the Mestalla to play their last match in Group H. United have qualified as a result of back-to-back wins against Juventus and Young Boys. However, they sit 6th in the Premier League and there is lots of uncertainty around the club. Valencia’s 1-0 defeat at Juventus saw their hopes for progression in the competition die. They are having an appalling league season and are 15th in the table after 18 games.

Valencia were beaten 1-0 by Juventus in the last round of group games, which saw them knocked out of the competition, with Mario Mandzukic scoring the only goal in Turin. Young Boys were initially doing them a favour as they were holding Man United to a 0-0 draw, but Marouane Fellaini netted late on to send them through and knock Valencia out.

Los Murcielagos are guaranteed a Europa League place after taking five points from five games, winning just one game, against Young Boys. The key match was their away match at Young Boys, where they could only draw 1-1. It was imperative for them to take six points from the two games against the whipping boys. The hosts have struggled to win games this season and are in a precarious position in La Liga, sitting 15th. They have drawn nine of their 15 league games, scoring just 12 goals.

Marcelinho did wonders for Valencia last season, taking them up to fourth in the league and securing a place in the Champions League. But it has been a major disappointment this season and they are just four points clear of the relegation zone. The Valencia manager is likely to use this match to rotate the squad and keep his key players fresh. Valencia have won just three games in La Liga, but have lost just three and drew another on Sunday when Mouctar Diakhaby equalised in the 92nd minute against Sevilla. Valencia are favourites at 7/5 to win the match but wins have been hard to come by this season and it looks a little short.

Manchester United will be hoping they can pinch top spot ahead of Juventus when they face Valencia on Wednesday night. They need to better Juventus’ result to seal top spot and it seems unlikely with the Old Lady travelling to Bern to face Young Boys. Mourinho is expected to rotate ahead of a huge clash against Liverpool on Sunday. He has already said the out-of-sorts Paul Pogba and Andreas Pereira will play. There clearly seems to be an issue with Pogba as Mourinho has left him out for their past two matches and questioned his work rate and mentality.

United are looking to win all three of their away Champions League group games for first time since 2010. However, their season has been turbulent to say the least with them eight points adrift of the top four. They did secure a confidence-boosting win over Fulham, scoring four and playing the attacking, fluid football that United fans want to see. Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford were on target for United, who won their first match in five league games. Anthony Martial missed the Fulham game with injury and he is unlikely to feature once again. Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw are also injury doubts. United come into this game as the underdogs with the bookmakers, being priced at 19/10 to win away from home here.
