Watford vs Southampton Betting Preview – 23/04/2019

Watford vs Southampton

Watford take on Southampton on Tuesday night in what promises to be an intriguing encounter. The hosts beat Huddersfield 2-1 on the weekend, a relatively routine win with a late consolation goal the only blemish, and are in contention to finish in the “best of the rest” 7th-place spot. Southampton meanwhile, are more or less safe with a five-point cushion over the relegation zone but could do with one more win to be sure of survival.

It’s been a mixed couple of weeks for Watford since their euphoric, extra time win over Wolves at Wembley secured them an FA Cup final. The hero of that day, Troy Deeney, was sent off against Arsenal but the ten men put in an excellent performance and will wonder how they didn’t take any points from the Gunners, but they since beat the already-relegated Huddersfield 2-1 over the weekend.

Whatever happens from here, Javi Gracia’s men have enjoyed a memorable, successful season, but they will want to use this final run-in to go into the final against Man City with a sense of positivity and momentum. Before the defeat against Arsenal, the Hornets had won their last four games at Vicarage Road and been unbeaten in six. Bet365 offer odds of 5/4 that it will be another win here. In the absence of the suspended Deeney, the most likely goalscorer looks to be the on-fire Gerard Deulofeu, who has eight goals in his last nine appearances – he can be backed at 15/8 to score anytime with Betfair.

Southampton have looked a solid team this season, but came unstuck on Tyneside on Saturday as Ayoze Perez inspired the Magpies to a 3-1 win, with the Spaniard scoring all three goals. Were things a little different, especially if the finishing was better, Saints might have got something from the game after battling back to make it 2-1, pushing for an equaliser before Perez broke to secure his hat-trick. Still, they’ve picked up 12 vital points over the last seven games, and the only other losses were to Liverpool and Southampton, who they put in good performances against.

James Ward-Prowse was perhaps a little lucky not to be sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity on the weekend, but was given the benefit of the doubt as his cynical block was far from goal. That’s useful for Saints given that Yan Valery is a doubt here and he could be needed at right wing-back again. The free-kick specialist is 7/2 with Unibet to score anytime – a goal would take him level with Danny Ings as Southampton’s top scorer with seven goals. Five of Southampton’s last six games have featured a goal at both ends, and both teams to score can be backed at 4/6 with Betfred.
