Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Preview – 28/10/2018

Werder Bremen welcome Bayer Leverkusen this weekend as they look to continue their excellent start to the Bundesliga campaign.

Werder are up in the lofty heights of third after eight games, level on points with second and just three points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. Bayer, meanwhile, have suffered a very poor start to the campaign which has left them in 13th place. It has been role reversal for these two sides so far this season, but Leverkusen will be looking to correct that with a win this weekend.

Werder Bremen only managed an 11th place finish in the Bundesliga last season, but they look to be in for a much better campaign this time around. They have amassed an impressive 17 points from their first eight games – that’s a point more than champions Bayern Munich. Florian Kohfeldt’s men know they will need to keep up their form in order to remain amongst the top clubs this weekend and if they truly hold top four ambitions, then they will need to beat teams like Leverkusen, who, despite their poor form, will hold a similar objective.

Last time out, Werder made it two wins on the bounce with an impressive away victory over Schalke. That followed a win over Wolfsburg. The Islanders’ only defeat to far this season arrived at the end of September against strugglers Stuttgart and there were some mitigating circumstances in that one with Werder going down to 10-men after 36 minutes. In all five of their wins this season, Werder have scored two or more goals and that’s something worth keeping in mind. Werder to score 2+ goals is 19/20 with Coral. At home and indeed in form, the Islanders are favourites to win this one, priced at 17/13 with 188 Bet.

Maxi Eggestein comes into this one leading the scoring charts at Weserstadion having racked up four goals from midfield. The German is 6/4 with Bet365 to score. Davy Klaassen will be a familiar name amongst English fans having played for Everton. He has netted twice this season, assisting one and he is 2/1 with Sky Bet to score this weekend. Another player to keep an eye on is Claudio Pizarro who is still going at the age of 40.

Bayer Leverkusen have endured a very poor start to the season and it has left them in 13th place, seven points off fifth, where they finished last season. Bayer have won just two games, racking up just eight points from as many games and pressure is may begin to mount on Heiko Herrlich if he doesn’t turn things around soon. Leverkusen are leaking goals, conceding 15 in eight, that’s almost two per game and they face another tough challenge heading to Bremen this weekend.

Last time out, Leverkusen continued their poor form with defeat in the Europa League. The 3-2 loss to FC Zurich leaves them second in the group and though they aren’t likely to finish top after that defeat, they are still likely to progress with a five-point gap over third with just three games remaining. In their last league outing, the Company drew 2-2 with Hannover at home, despite playing against 10 men for more than 30 minutes. That result followed a goalless draw against Freiburg and you have to go back four league matches to find the last domestic win when Leverkusen beat Fortuna 2-1 away from home. The bookmakers are backing Leverkusen to continue their poor run of form this weekend, Bet365 price an away win at 21/10. A draw would be a good result away from home and that’s 13/5 with Betfair.

Goals have been hard to come-by for Leverkusen this season and that may make a Werder win to nil a good option at 7/2 with most bookmakers. If the visitors are to score, then Kevin Volland may be worth backing at 11/5 with Bet365, despite only managing two so far this season. Leverkusen are 11/4 to draw a blank with William Hill.
