Beckham was speaking at the Grassroots Soccer Annual Charity Gala last week, where he talked in depth about his time at Manchester United and his relationship with Ferguson. The former England and United captain joked about the incident that left him requiring two butterfly stitches back in February 2003. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was alleged to have kicked a football boot at Beckham, after an FA Cup defeat to Arsenal. The story was mainstream news, even prompting the front-page headline ‘FERGIE DECKS BECKS’ in one tabloid newspaper.

Beckham went on to join Real Madrid in the summer of that same year for £25m. Many people point to ‘boot-gate’ as the breaking point of Beckham and Ferguson’s working relationship. With Ferguson also reportedly not happy with Beckham’s celebrity lifestyle at the time, seemingly factors that led to Beckham’s decision to swap Manchester for the Spanish capital at the end of that season.

Beckham won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League trophy during his time at Old Trafford. He was a key part of the ‘Class of 92’ side that went on to write themselves into United folklore under the stewardship of the legendary Scottish Manager. TV presenter Rachael Riley quizzed him on his relationship with his former manager at the event last week, where Beckham talked about some of Ferguson’s methods: “On European nights, the boss would come out onto the pitch and start taking penalties and free-kicks, telling players how great he was when he played, the goals he scored.”

Beckham brought up the boot-incident later in the interview, as he joked:  “The time I got to really find out how great he was, was in a game against Arsenal. I think I’d made a couple of mistakes in the game and he came into the changing room and we had a couple of words. He started to walk over to me and he kicked a pile of clothes on the floor, and out came this boot and it hit me. It was then I realised how actually accurate he was!”
