Javier Mascherano was visibly moved as Barcelona players and staff held a ceremony to honour his dedication to the club. The Catalan giants this week confirmed that long-serving Mascherano has agreed a deal to leave the club for Hebei China Fortune.  The Argentine, nicknamed “El Jefecito” (“The Little Chief”) was holding back the tears as he gave an emotional farewell speech.

Mascherano made 334 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, though goals weren’t his forte as he scored just once – a penalty against Ossuana in April 2017! However, Mascherano became an integral part of Barcelona’s successes since joining the club from Liverpool in 2010. The versatile Argentian went on to win a whopping 18 trophies with the club, meaning he won a trophy every 19 games on average!

His decision to move on comes after a season of limited game-time, where he as featured just seven times in the league. He was clearly upset as he addressed the room, saying: “I was the fortunate one because seven and a half years ago I came here to fulfil a dream. And now it’s time to wake up. The dream is over.”

The club are also expected to pay tribute to the “The Little Chief” during tonight’s Barcelona derby with Espanyol.  You can check out the full video from Tuesday night’s ceremony below:
