Pablo Carreno Busta vs Jan Lennard Struff

Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Jan Lennard Struff in the quarter-finals in Auckland.

Pablo Carreno Busta, ranked 24th in the world, reached the last eight via default after fellow Spaniard David Ferrer retired after two games. Carreno Busta himself really struggled with injury towards the end of last season. However, he did reach the last-16 of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the Miami Open, Estoril Open and Barcelona Open.

Jan Lennard Struff progressed to the quarter-finals with a straightforward victory over Kiwi Rubin Statham. He lost just three games in the match. The German began his campaign against Laslo Djere and was leading 7-6 2-0 when the Hungarian had to retire. Struff was on the wrong end of a close three-setter last week against Jeremy Chardy in Brisbane. The tall big-server is currently ranked 58th in the world and will have hopes of winning his first ever singles title in Auckland.

Carreno Busta needs matches under his belt and the Ferrer retirement did little good for him. Struff is likely to be in better condition and we fancy him to get the win at 4/5.

Taylor Fritz vs Cameron Norrie

Taylor Fritz faces Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals of the ASB Classic.

Taylor Fritz recorded one of the finest wins of his career when he beat top 10 player and fellow American John Isner in straight sets. Fritz knocked out the No.1 seed to reach the last eight by winning two tie-breaks. He had to battle back from a set down to beat Marius Copil in the round-of-32. The American lost the first set 6-4 but fought hard to win the next two sets, 6-3 6-4. He did however lose to Denis Kudla in the first match of the season in Brisbane in a close three-setter. He is the 2nd fastest American ever to reach an ATP final, accomplishing the feat in just his third career event.

Brit Cameron Norrie overcame Joao Sousa 7-6 6-4 to reach the last eight. The world No.93 saved all six break points he faced and converted his first and only break point of the match. Norriw began his season in style when he defeated mercurial Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets. The Auckland born 23-year-old took just 58 minutes to win the match against Paire, who is ranked 38 places above him. He saved all four break points he faced and won 79% of his first-serve points, breaking once in the first set and twice in the second. Norrie broke into the top 100 last season and reached two ATP tour semi-finals.

There is little to split these two and that is reflected in the prices. We see it being a very competitive match and three sets is a good bet at 11/8.

Philipp Kohlschreiber vs Fabio Fognini

Philipp Kohlschreiber takes on Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals of the ASB Classic.

Philipp Kohlschreiber is yet to lose a set in Auckland. The German eased past Bradley Klahn before then overcoming Ugo Humbert in the last-16. The 35-year-old is looking in good shape as he aims to win his eighth title of his career. He began his season with a disappointing defeat to eventual finalist Tomas Berdych in straight sets.

Fabio Fognini edged past Peter Gojowczyk to progress to the last eight of the ASB Classic in Auckland. The Italian was pushed to a final set tiebreak against the German and had to show fighting spirit to come through his first match of the season. The No.2 seed will be eyeing a ninth tournament win of his career.

Fognini is slight underdog which is surprising. In any time of the season he would be favourite against an ageing Kohlschreiber but he probably starts as underdog due to his lack of matches and unconvincing win against Gojowczyk. Kohlschreiber does have a 6-2 winning record over the Italian and that’s why we will go a three set match at 11/8 instead of the Fognini win.
