Rubin Statham vs Hyeon Chung

Rubin Statham takes on Hyeon Chung in the round of 32 in Auckland.

New-Zealander Rubin Statham was awarded a wildcard after Czech Tomas Berdych withdrew from the tournament in Auckland. The 32-year-old is the only Kiwi to play in the main draw of singles in either the men’s and women’s tournaments’ and will have the support of the home crowd when he faces Chung.  Statham is ranked 360th in the world and is used to playing Challengers. Last week, he reached the round of 16, beating No.2 seed Quentin Halys before losing to Donald Young.

Hyeon Chung will be looking to improve on his quarter-final showing last year in Auckland. The Japanese beat Tennys Sandgren and John Isner before losing to David Ferrer. The 22-year-old had a very good season on the whole, reaching the semi-final of the Australian Open. He suffered an injury midway through the season which affected his chances of winning his first title. Chung, ranked 25th, was beaten by Ernests Gulbis last week in his first match of the season.

Chung should get his first win of the season against a modest opponent in Statham. He still might be a little rusty but it’d be a surprise if he didn’t win 2-0 in sets at 1/3

Recommended bet: Hyeon Chung to win 2-0 at 1/3 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Cameron Norrie vs Joao Sousa

Cameron Norrie faces Portuguese Joao Sousa in the round of 16 at the ASB Classic.

Brit Cameron Norrie began his season in style when he defeated mercurial Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets. The Auckland born 23-year-old took just 58 minutes to win the match against Paire, who is ranked 38 places above him. He saved all four break points he faced and won 79% of his first-serve points, breaking once in the first set and twice in the second. Norrie broke into the top 100 last season and reached two ATP tour semi-finals.

Joao Sousa won his first match of the season against the odds when he defeated talented teenager Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the ASB Classic. The Portuguese came from a set down against the Canadian, who hit 78 unforced errors. Sousa will be looking to go further in Auckland than last year, when he also reached the last-16. The 29-year-old was a finalist in Auckland in 2017.

This should be a tightly-contested match with both players strong on the baseline. It is therefore a good idea to side with a three-set match at 6/5.

Recommended bet: Three sets at 6/5 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

John Isner vs Taylor Fritz

John Isner faces Taylor Fritz in the last-16 of the Auckland Open.

John Isner faces his fellow American in Auckland on Tuesday. It is the first match of the season for Isner, who is the No.1 seed. The 33 year-old won his first ATP title at the ASB Classic in 2010 and will be looking to win the tournament for the third time. Isner enjoyed a fantastic season last year, qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals after winning the Miami Masters and reaching the Wimbledon semi-final. The American had a slow start to the 2018 season, losing in his first three matches of the season and he will be looking to improve on that this season.

Taylor Fritz battled back from a set down to beat Marius Copil in the round-of-32. The American lost the first set 6-4 but fought hard to win the next two sets, 6-3 6-4. He did however lose to Denis Kudla in the first match of the season in Brisbane in a close three-setter. He is the 2nd fastest American ever to reach an ATP final, accomplishing the feat in just his third career event.

John Isner is favourite at 1/2 to win the match and has won the previous two matches when he has faced Fritz. Both players have excellent serves and a good bet is over 10.5 games in set one at 4/6.

Recommended bet: Over 10.5 games in set one at 4/6 with Sky Bet – BET HERE
